NIGHTWISH Singer: 'I Think I've Done A Hell Of A Job In This Band'

U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine conducted a short interview with NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon for its "Xmas Rocks" issue, available on newsstands now. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Kerrang!: 2008 – rock or suck fest?

Anette: "It's been a mix of both. I've enjoyed seeing so many different parts of the world and experiencing different cultures; and playing shows in South America was a dream come true. But, of course, touring can be quite hard on you, and I'm still the newest addition to a group of people, and that will always bring some conflicts. It takes some getting used to the business of being in a band this size. I was sick a lot and the lowest points of my year were when I had to miss some shows, which always really upsets me because I hate letting people down. I had to have a lot of shots in my ass, even right before we played Rock Am Ring I needed to get one just so I could perform. But I think doing any job should have both its positive and negative parts."

Kerrang!: When did you most feel like a rock star?

Anette: "When we were in Sao Paulo, Brazil, we got the police to take us between the hotel and venue. We were going really fast between the four lanes of traffic and being thrown about in the car with the sirens blaring. It felt kinda awkward and I remember thinking, 'You know, maybe I'm quite a big rock star now, and I'm not entirely sure if I like that or if that's a bit weird!'"

Kerrang!: So have you had to pinch yourself a lot this year?

Anette: "That happens a lot! Sometimes I get overwhelmed by all the fans. When they meet me and they're so nervous that they're shaking or crying, I'm like, 'Hey, it's only me!' It's so har to see yourself as this person that people adore and look up to."

Kerrang!: What are you most proud of?

Anette: "I'm really proud of myself in that I think I've done a hell of a job in this band. I've proven to myself and other people how strong I am, and that I can be at the lowest point and still get up there and do it over and over again. I feel that I've learned to be strong."

Kerrang!: Who was your hero of the year?

Anette: "There were many people who inspired me this year, but, of course, it was such a big thing that [Barack] Obama won the election to be the new President of the United States. I think he's really a hero because I think he knows that there are a lot of people who will really want to wipe him off the face of the Earth. He's a humanist and things will definitely be changing now. He can really make a difference to the world, and I hope he does."

  1. I do think she's done an amazing job in this band too.

  2. Nettan is great, no matter what people say. :)

  3. She hasn't done an amazing job and she hasn't proven herself strong. She walked off of the damn stage crying cause some guys were chatting Tarjas name and cursing at her. She broke down. That isn't strong. It's human but not strong. Nightwish hasn't been the same without Tarja. It is such a disappointment! All you kids that just got into metal might like it but old school metal fans know the difference. She's not bad, she's just not great and she isn't metal. Tarja being a classically trained operatic vocalist was. Classical music is the closest you come to metal. Combined, it was phenomenal! I had the first original nightwish CD imported when they first came out. They were AMAZING and remained amazing until they got rid of the key element; TARJA! Now with Annette, it has become crappy MTV METAL. Sorry but that is what it is. I am so embarrassed to wear my old nighwish logo shirts. It's kind of like Metallica. They were amazing and now, it's just embarrassing.

  4. completely agree with "the iron maiden". she's not bad, but not compareable with tarja.. ://

  5. Big hug to Anette! She's been facing so much hate that any one less strong would've been dead by now!I love you Anette and I am so proud of what you have done in Nightwish!I'm happy to see that you have gained this self-confidence,the self-esteem that you owe to yourself.Keep it that way,you are great!

  6. Marcelo made Tarja think she is irreplaceable, and now Annette thinks she is all that too.
Well fuck it. Where the hell is Nightwish going? What is future holding for this band?

If anybody read the Nightwish biography they should know some facts...

    Done hell of a job?

You call the mutilation of old era songs with her "interpretations" good? great?
Ive seen lousy cover bands which are better than this crap.

Not to mention she cant sing her own songs too. Every chorus she switches to the back vocal singing, rather than lead vocal.. coz its probably high for her to sing.

I remember watching a video from USA tour. Tuomas was so drunk he could barely stand (well they play everything on playback now anyways)
and you couldn't even tell which song is it until Marco starts to sing 50 seconds in the clip.. Then you go.. Ohh.. its WISH I HAD AN ANGEL:

My message is, rather than saying IVE DONE A HELL OF A JOB say, IM TRYING MY BEST.
You will sound less egocentric Annette.

    Don't shit where you eat.

I really don't have anything against you, but your voice doesn't fit Nightwish. And your recently acquired attitude doesn't too.

Enkeli wrote on 21.12.2008 at 00:43

  7. to "Enkeli"
If you don't like Anette and her voice "don't fit" (only your opinion) then you better listen those "cover bands".They don't make music only to you and they can't please everybody. They don't need your support because there is still people who like the band. You don't know nothing about famous artist life because you are NOT a "famous artist" so don't talk about things what you don't know nothing...it's so stupid and pointless!

  8. I've been a fan of Nightwish for awhile now I started listening right before OceanBorn). I've seen them with Tarja and with Anette several times live. I like Anette and think she is a good singer, and a nice person...and I really like Dark Passion Play, but when I go back and listen to Tarja, I miss that Nightwish... I really despise her worthless husband for fucking everything up. I don't blame the guys in the band, they did what they had to. I think Anette will get better as time goes on...Ive seen them 3 times on this tour and she has improved each time, but regardless of how much she improves, she isn't Tarja, and it will never be old Nightwish...

  9. @rockman

    WTF?
hahaha you crack me up. ha ha ha
how old are you 12? 13?
    less?

Enkeli wrote on 21.12.2008 at 11:51

  10. To the guys who are bullshitting Anette:

Could you have done a better job? Could anyone else have?

At the end of the day, Nightwish HAS been saved. They could have been a flop with everyone and their dog slating them off, but now they've evolved; not in some peoples' eyes, which is fair enough, but guys, you have to admit, looking at the hardship Nightwish faced, Anette has done an amazing job.

@Enkeli: I've seen Anette and Nightwish live. In my show, the 'Old Era' Nightwish songs were sung beautifully, (I'm very harsh on bands when I see them live, and seriously, I enjoyed their performance). Tuomas wasn't drunk at my show, far from it. And there was no obvious playback, unlike many other bands

Jon wrote on 21.12.2008 at 14:59

  11. Well said Jon - I couldn't have put it better myself

Toni wrote on 22.12.2008 at 01:16

  12. you can't ask people to evolve when you can't evolve yourself; people still bullshit Anette because NW still publicly bullshit Tarja and her husband. When you have a big audience like the one of NW you can't play with people's feelings this way, it can be dangerous and become uncontrolable at some points. This proves they are truly immature and fooling guys, having put also Anette in such a bad situation. Anette isn't as strong as Tarja, also she has a kid and family responsabilities.

mike wrote on 23.12.2008 at 17:53

  13. Well, i agree with "The Iron Maiden", Anette is doing her best but that is not a hell job. Anyway, I think that NW is not the same nor in a vocal way, nor in a musical way. Since Century Child the feeling of the songs is not the same, they wanted to change and Tarja didn't fit in their new style (even she sings rap in Romanticide!). So I think that Anette is what they wanted, she is no so good as Tarja is, but I think they know and they don't mind. This is their new style, and if you don't like it I think is better you listen to another band, the NW with Tarja era is dead now (sadly...)

haatidje wrote on 23.12.2008 at 21:58

  14. Anette is not Tarja and she is very wise not to try to be her. She's got her own style, which could not differ more from the Tarja style. The Band chose her and a deliberate change of their vocal sound. The alterations Anette makes in singing the songs (old and new ones!) live shows to me that she's very musically and she's able to vary the melodylines inside the strong corsett of the playback orchestra. To me Anette seems to be a very open person, who does not overvalue herself and her role in the band. I like her and I like the new lively interaction between all bandmembers on stage - you can really see that they love their job and the fans very much! But I'm a bit sad that she won't be able to sing the beautiful "Sleeping sun" in an enchanting way, although she might find her very own version of the song (her attempts so far were not at all successful in my eyes/ears). But I wish the band all the best and I will keep on going to their conserts as well as I go to Tarja's concerts!

Sabine wrote on 24.12.2008 at 00:06

  15. Obviously we will never have the "old nightwish" back. but who cares? you have what they've done on 5 friggin albums! now its time for a new era, and i support anette all the way!

oh yea, and you'd break down too if that happened on top of being on tour for two years!

Max wrote on 24.12.2008 at 23:12

  16. WTF does it matter to Anette that Obama won the election?

Cadence wrote on 31.01.2009 at 12:39

  17. Anyone else notice how much Anette's changed in her time in NW? She started off as this cool looking punker chick, now she's like a Swedish Brittany Spears!
