NIGHTWISH Singer: 'At The Moment, We Don't Have Any Problems'
19.03.2009
Finnish web site Karjalainen.fi has uploaded two short video clips (see below) of NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon talking about the recent media frenzy surrounding her rumored "problems" with the band and what she did during NIGHTWISH's recent three-month break from touring.
Regarding the alleged issues she has with NIGHTWISH, Anette says, "At the moment, we don't have any problems. I think any group, working group, can have, after being together for a while, there will be this conflict state — every group has it; it's important for the evolvement of the group, and I think we need it. The problem wasn't that we had a problem, it was that we were so, so tired. All of us. There was no rest last year. [And now] we are all happy. We are very happy."
In an exclusive interview with Classic Rock's Dave Ling, NIGHTWISH keyboardist/mainman Tuomas Holopainen was asked if alarm bells rang when, echoing her predecessor, Olzon recently hired a personal manager (Swedish management company Hagenburg Management, which also represents EUROPE and THE CARDIGANS). "At the beginning I had a feeling of déjà vu," he replied. "But when we discussed it I understood that she needs somebody who speaks her own language [Swedish]. Her manager is a very, very reasonable guy."
When asked how Anette is handling the fame, Tuomas replied, "She has told me a couple of times that she might not be able to handle it, on top of her divorce. I've seen her close to collapse and it has scared me, so we are protecting her. There will be no more interviews."
In a recent interview with MeNaiset, the most popular women's magazine in Finland, Olzon stated about her decision to hire a personal manager, "It was a hard decision for me because I didn't want problems with the band. I said that I have different needs in these areas than the rest of the guys. I, for example, need clothing sponsors which doesn't interest the rest of the band. Now I have a person who will be able to take care of that kind of stuff."

that's a great thing to hear for a change.
I only hope that neither Tuomas or Marco feel differently and decide to issue a public statement about it.

Hm, so they decided to specially stress that everything is fine? Even via special interview? LOL. Sounds suspicious - when everything is really fine you don't need to talk about it on purpose.((( Don't believe in it really.

i believe she's far far far whorse of the bad/nasty Tarja's side.. she is using her position to obtain fame, money and , yes, clothig sponsors :p
Tarja got to that after years and years working and touring with the band , but annette, after a year or so, claims to be this diva that she is not. if she could really SING one could bear her snob attitute at least a bit more, but she cannot sing. for what Nightwish have become after Dpp and her entry in the band , i agree with Messhuggha's guitarist: this is not (anymore) heavy metal
i believe she DOES HAVE problems with the band and they'll soon realise they not only have chosen the wrong person, but also lost their originary musical essence

if you don't like it you only have to stop listen and interest yourselves in that. go away. and let people live his own lives.

Ron, linda. Its an interview, which means that questions are asked to the person being interviewed. She didn't actively seek out a journalist and say, just to let you know, no problems here! Anette is simply answering the questions based on her feeling at the moment; if there have been problems last year then why would she want to bring them up again and jeopardise the new tour? And Tuomas' comment of 'deja vu' was blown out of proportion; read the entire interview instead of panicking over headlines.
Jon wrote on 19.03.2009 at 22:49
to linda...
Listen carefully what Anette said in the interview:"We HAD problems like any band...we was so tired...but NOW everything is fine".Tuomas said same way so I don't understand what you don't "believe" because everything is very clear!I just watched the Made in Hong Kong document DVD and there Tuomas explain everything and says how hard work past 2 years with the concerts they have had. Many people don't understand how hard is touring around the world and live like a family.I hope that many people gonna watch that DVD.

Is it just me, or she does not seem .... well? I mean psychologically? look at her face, lips, the way she moves... she is clearlly overdoing.
And she does not even look at the camera.
This overcheered statement would not fool even a fool.
The only thing missing was a "hurray, hurray!" in the end.
Poor thing.

I agree with people here. It is not natural, this statement, her behaviour. It is like a desperate move to convince everybody "everything is great". But Tuomas himself for several times said or hinted that things were not so great, are not that great and that they will have to discuss some real problems. And than they arrange THIS INTERVIEW to highlight this "message of happiness". NW has turned to some kind of drama queens now.

Last year it was vice versa. Anette was claiming that they had a fight while Tuomas was denying it.
TheSeer wrote on 20.03.2009 at 12:04
Tuomas said that he saw her "close to collaps and she scared him and that they are protecting her".
Touchy. And, well, what else could he say, after all? They have chosen her and it would not look right, if they stop support her right now, wouldn´t it?
But HOW would they do that, exactly? I mean, how could you protect a person in these conditions? On a world tour? In front of fans? Will they play without fans? Or stop cooperate with press?
I can imagine that she could be protected in hospital, but HONESTLY, let us just see, how they willl manage this year. Let us just see, how this big happiness will unfold...
And as for all of them being tired - did anyone else walk out of a show crying? Marco, perhaps?
mermaid wrote on 20.03.2009 at 13:17
i think anette has done the right thing in getting a personal manager, she does need someone who can speak the same language, and as tuomas says she needs protection from the likes of the media who i think, are trying to oust her out of the band because of 'tarja favouritisum'. why can't these media 'people' just let her do what she does best and that's singing tuomas's 'masterpieces'.

I'v really tired from all this little lies now and then from NW. All this speeches wich do not correspond with each other, this attempts first to complain, than to blame own failures on others, than to fake "we are fine" thing, etc, etc, etc. I was a big supporter of NW, but now I see how they take people for fools, believing that every word from their mouth would be taken as granted.Nope it won't. This cheesy interview is like the last drop.

I don't know what to think
I desperately want to believe Anette, but I'm getting this vibe that something's just not right. I hope that's not true, and I hope we'll get back to the happy Nightwish we've known before Anette's breakdown and such.
I guess all I sense is the tension between everyone. They've been on their most extensive tour to date, and it's gotta be extremely hard on Anette. I guess they're attempting to cover the tension up so things don't seem bleak for fans. Who needs wild rumors about the band breaking up or something circulating around the internet anyway?
I think, once they're done with the tour and take a break, maybe start working on the new album, everything will be back to normal again.
Max wrote on 20.03.2009 at 16:48
Hey you bunch of psychologists having read a small exerpt from the interview when Anette is asked dumb questions, make idiot comments and fiction. The one who have real problems is you.
Dr Freud wrote on 20.03.2009 at 17:11
I think how they definitely shouldn't have done such a massive tour. But the reasons are pretty understandable tho, one can't live of selling albums nowadays. Even if you're Nightwish :)
They're my favorite band but despite of that I can be objective: it's really silly to dwell upon such idiotic vids and so called "interviews". It's clear how Anette did have problems but a few months off tour that they had recently has obviously sorted that out. I can't even begin to imagine under what pressure she was that whole time. And it's great that the new tour schedule isn't as hectic as it was last year, it will give them time to breathe. So stop with the "omg they're breaking up" implications. It's kinda pathetic :p
Cheers from Croatia ;)

Come one, how much playing around will be there? They say different things about situation in the band, then try to pull smiley faces, than again something strange and truly unnatural ((( It is either for PR or they need to know how to communicate with each other. Cause it is clearly seen that there are problems in communication in this band. And I hope that band members will stop making up stuff and be mature.
Samuel wrote on 20.03.2009 at 22:42
OMFG, guys.
Stop analyzing the damn interview. Do you guys know Anette and other members of Nightwish personally? No? Then leave them the hell alone; you don't know what's going on in their lives. You may think you do, but you don't. If there is tension, do you think your speculation is making things any easier on them? You shouldn't be stressing over that sort of stuff anyway! It's not your band. Leave it alone. Your job, as a fan, is to enjoy Nightwish's music by buying albums, going to shows, ect. It is not to find drama in every piece of news they release. 'Cause, if there are problems in the band, they aren't your problem. That's the business of Nightwish, so stay out of it!
Geez, I'd hate to be a celebrity in any form due to the fact that no one can have an ounce of privacy and a moment of peace. There's always something wrong and Goddess knows people will find it even when it's not there and broadcast it all over the internet.
marta: I find it highly hard to believe that Anette is "worse than the bad side of Tarja." Tarja is the person who said to Tuomas' face that she "didn't need this band anymore" and was planning to leave it anyway. I can't stand it that people blame the Nightwish boys for Taja's exit when she was going to leave anyway sooner or later! Besides that, Anette has been an absolute sweetheart and has to endure a lot of harsh criticism from assholes who like to suck Tarja's ass.
Jon: Thank you for being one of the few intelligent people that have commented thus far. :)
RockMan: Thank you for being another of the intelligent people that have commented thus far. :)
Unless you guys have spoken directly to Anette or can display that you're a certified therapist or something, then you can't determine whether or not her behavior is strange. Sure, you can think it is, but do you really know? Are you that experienced with the human mind? 'Cause not everyone is the same. This woman has had to go through immense stress since she joined this band. What you say or do here isn't going to change what the band does or what state it's in, so hell, just leave it alone. What is the point of starting a "Is NIghtwish REALLY Okay" conspiracy, exactly?

What Messhugahs guitaist has to say has no weight or importance. It is impossible to put bands in a box and define their style because they get influences from everywhere. While it is true some bands fit in a certain mold aren't you glad that Nightwish are like no particular style or other band? Originality is a good thing. Who wants to hear clones of someone else?
Nightwish for want of a better box to put them in are a ROCK band with operatic and metal overtones...The opera comes from Anette and the Metal comes from Marco's influences.

I'd like to give Sanguine a round of applause.
At last, somebody who knows what they're talking about!
I hate the amount of badmouthing Anette gets, she's a lovely person and how is it her fault that people prefer Tarja? If you like Tarja, go listen to Tarja. The only person you can blame here anyways is Tarja, for making the guys feel like they had to fire her.
Well, Anette, Tarja and Nightwish are all talented amazing people, so stop bitching and find something more worth your while to complain about, because as much as some people want Tarja back, that ain't gonna happen. She's got her own career now, and good on her for not just giving up.

I give major props to Sanguine. As Nightwish fans, we all come from different parts of the world. As different as we are and where we come from, we all have one thing in common: We LOVE Nightwish! So if you are going to be a fan, you need to have an open mind about all aspects of the band, including stress from the new vocalist. 2 and a half years of Anette<9 years of Tarja in the band. By the time Once came out and they achieved worldwide success, Tarja was well aquainted with the ropes of being a celebrity. Give Anette time. She is already getting better (I saw the Brixton show). And I truly believe that Anette will sound even better on the next record. Treat the lady with some respect =) We love you Anette!

"The opera comes from Anette"?! You are deaf or just do not know what opera is. Anette doesn't have anything to do with opera.
But I have to agree that all these comfortable excuses they find, when they say one thing, then say something different just to cover it, just to show that everything is perfect when it is not, is really weak and lame. Doesn't arouse too much respect towards them. And I did have lots of respect towards new NW - until I saw how much they lie.

Guys, I do not understand why you should be a psychologist, if you just SEE that things are looking strange. And not just in this one interview - I believe you did read other interviews as well, I mainly mean the one with Tuomas Holopainen from Greek Metal Hammer. He said that one person should decide in the end of this tour whether to continue with gorup or not. And when he was asked if he did talk about Empu, he said not, when asked if he did talk about Jukka, he said no. When asked if band will share Anette´s costs for her manager, he said that no, because it is her private thing.
It is so interesting, that Tuomas Holopainen who IS the mastermind of Nigtwish clearly sees the problem for their future and even IN PRESS - which means PUBLICALLY- states, that one person might NOT continue with NIGHTWISH, but you all JUST KNOW that everything is OK with this band, because she had give this overcheered interview. PS: HE also denied something Anette said about NOT COMING to Greece anymore and apologized to greek funs. Bell ringing? Tarja did not want to go to US, remember?
mermaid wrote on 24.03.2009 at 10:38
The funny thing that the situation is so much repeating the one with this ex-vocalist they had. The communication problems in the band, the need for the special manager for the vocalist, though in NW book someone stated that whoever would be the new vocalist in the band she should not hire private manager, then all this tour crisis and bad attitudes towards fands (Brasilian thing where innocent Brasilian fans were put to blame for nothing, Greek thing where vocalist insulted the whole country).
Dora wrote on 24.03.2009 at 11:54
To Dora: still the same thing going on and on and on, right?
Just a little bit faster, this time.
What did she actually say about Greece? I did not find that statement, just pieces of it, or hints, what it was about.
Who do you think is the new vocalist going to be?
mermaid wrote on 24.03.2009 at 12:44
The other thing that is sometimes surprising me is that they did 150 gigs within a year (voluntarilly, nobody made them do this) and that it is the reason why we are just so SORRY for poor, poor Anette, who had to work SO MUCH. You know, guys, I HAVE to work 5 days a week, sometimes even 6 days a week, 9 hours a day and for much lower salary then she has and nobody is wearing Tshirt with my face on it and nobody seems to be sorry for me.
But, honestly, I can not imagine that I would pass out, or run out of the work crying, or insult Greece (or Spain, or Malta, for that purpose). I could imagine this might happen if you are in the age like 16, but I am FORTY. And as far as I know she is something like that, too.
There are things you just DO NOT. It is called responsibility and/or job.
mermaid wrote on 24.03.2009 at 12:58
Yeah, I mean come on, it is so obvious, that only the one with pink glasses on will say that everything is perfect.
About Greece she said something like "no one must go to this country". It is because she wasn't happy with organizators of the gig or smth, lol, but somehow she decided to blame the whole country, not just the organizators. For me it is rather bitchy. It is not country's fault that some guys didn't give her something the way she wanted.
And yeah lots of female vocalists of metal and rock bands work as hell during tours-it is their job. Sharon den Adel from WT was performing while being pregnant on her last months -and she still was wearing corsets, beautiful long and heavy dresses and gave her best, but she wasn't parading herself like she was supposed to get a medal for all this.

Ms. Olzon decided to play a rock star out of herself and after some organization problems during gig she made a comment in interview that everythng was so horrible that " no band must go to Greece". I mean to mix your displeasure with some organisators' mistakes and the fault of the whole country takes lots of "delicacy" and "wits". Many Greek fans were quite furious with that "kind" attitude towards their country.
Dora wrote on 26.03.2009 at 10:04
to Maricela: I only know what Dora wrote me (not being greek) and I can only copy for you, what Tuomas said about it in his interview for greek Metal Hammer:
"J: Ok, last question. I guess your last show in Athens is among the worst moments of the tour, right?
T: About that, I wanted to say that there?s nothing to do with the fans who have been waiting to see us and welcomed us with warmth, which I won?t forget. But the promoter fuck it up! I?ve never met anywhere anybody worse. He put in danger our gig. There have been some statements (he means Anette?s statements) that we won?t return to Greece and I want to say that it?s not true at all, in no way! We love Greece and we know how warmly the people there support us. Of course, we will come back to Greece as soon as possible, when we have the chance. But we will be careful with some matters which have nothing to do with the people. And we will have a show that the Greek audience deserves.
J: You don?t want to tell me about the promoter?
T: No, it would be non-professional and at the end, it?s nothing to do with the fans?
J: Ok, thanks for this discussion! Do you want to add something?
T: I want to thank you too for giving me the chance to explain to the Greek audience my feelings and Nightwish feelings for them. I hope to come there as soon as possible!"
I have put some more pieces from it comments for the previous article (Made in Hong Kong), too. But there are many refferences to her statements around at the moment and as far as I have heard she did insult all country and said something like "nobody should go there" or so. There is also video on youtube showing her sitting in a car and ignoring funs - I think some spanish or latin americano source put that there and it is quite amazing to see Anette being SOO COMPLETELLY TROUBLED by her fans.
mermaid wrote on 26.03.2009 at 10:08
I see new Dora comment so I would like to say that not just greek, but latinos are furious, too. Remember that people watching this page are core Nightwish fans, mainly from Finland, but there are other web pages and many newspapers and not just in finland, but abroad, too.
Present Nightwish behavior is not too admired - if you are not exactly Nightwish fan, you might even consider them to be quite stupid.
I remember last HIM gig in our country - it was quite expensive to buy a ticket (for kids and teenagers for sure!)and There have been full trains of young people from all country coming to see them. That means that some people travelled 6-9 hours, paid for trains and buses, paid for ticket, see the gig and travelled 6-9 hours back home, off course not free of charge, again. And you know what? It was worth it. They did not faint, did not run off stage after 3 songs crying, did not cancel the show and Ville Valo did not insult my coutry in the end - as a special bonus.
Should I be one of those guys in Argentina, i would be pretty upset.
mermaid wrote on 26.03.2009 at 10:24
