TARJA TURUNEN: "I want to make a radical difference to the songs even more than My Winter Storm"

New interview with TARJA TURUNEN has been posted online by SonicCathedral.com. Besides talking about her American tour, Tarja was talking about differences between the new album and My Winter Storm. Part of the interview can be read below.

Jason:  This is your first time touring solo [without Nightwish] in the United States. What made you decide to come out here finally?

Tarja:  You know this is my third try I think already (*laughs*) to come here so I’m actually really, really happy it finally came true. My wishes were fulfilled. You know I have lots of followers here in the United States and they have been supporting me a lot in my solo career as well as in my previous career with Nightwish. So it has been really marvelous to get their support and now it’s very important for me to give my best for them. Back to them somehow. This gratitude that I have.

Jason:   Speaking of Nightwish. You were let go in a very bad public way. It’s been a few years since the letter and you seem much happier now. How have things been for you after going through that experience?

Tarja:  Well many things have changed. Actually the whole career as a solo artist is radically different than being a member of a band. I mean everything is different. The whole organization around me. I have to be deciding more things on my own. I mean there is so many things. Also the responsibility that I’m carrying on my own is of course very different than before. But the thing is that I have learned so many things. Every day is such a different day and I’m also writing songs on my own today so I’m really happy to be able to do that. To have that sort of freedom to explore what is inside of my soul and my heart. Then let people hear that. What’s really there. That has been a really beautiful thing.

Jason:   So you’re doing a lot more writing. What is it like to be more involved in that process rather than just being the singer?

Tarja:  Of course it gets more personal. That’s what it all is. I mean it gets really personal and you know it’s just very rewarding. I have to be so honest with the music today that’s because I believe in that. I don’t know if this is a very naive thought in a way but I believe if you are honest with the music then people can reach the message easier and the music touches them. I mean music is the emotion for me and that’s all about it. I want to deliver emotions for the audience. For the listeners. That is it. That’s the beauty in it. It’s so lovely to be a musician. It’s a privilege today to be an artist.

Jason:  You have a second album you have been working on called What Lies Beneath.

Tarja:  Yes.

Jason:  How has that been coming along and when can we expect it?

Tarja:  Well I have quite many songs already (*laughs*). Actually I wrote around 20 songs already which are not all going to be the album of course (*laughs*). Otherwise I need to make a double album again (*laughs*). But I mean that there are lots of good songs. Kind of a same continuance process from My Winter Storm to the next one but the radical difference is the variety of songs that will be offered but more or less radical with the heavier guitars and with overall heavier songs. Then also some moody sounds...So I still want to keep on the same line but make a radical difference to the songs even more than My Winter Storm.

  1. Oh, well. I did read it all, but honestly, no idea what it is all about. She is SO FREE. WE KNOW, she use to say that every second week within last 3,5 years.
Heavier guitars? God in his mercy... hope we will survive THAT. She is so honest with music today - meaning is she never was before??!
Teaching is good. If the sales go wrong, teaching is a good way how to pay bills.
Maternity? Maybe about time to do so.
Still, what was THE POINT? And. Some parts are not even made of normal sentencies... is it so difficult for fully grown woman to talk in normal sentencies? And what was so funny she had to laugh so much?
It was pure waste of time to read this.

  2. @mermaid
Sorry but I haven´t forced you to read it.... and I´m sure there are Tarja´s fans who will be interested in reading it.

And maybe it's about time for Tuomas to fall in love in some other woman and stop writing "symphonies of sorrow and agony" about Tarja.

  4. To Daniela: no reason to apologize, it was not you who was giving these strange answers. Actually, you look to be able to put sentence with the beginning and the end. And with a point. And you did not mention how you enjoy your freedom, too, for what I am very thankfull.

To Seer: Good point, TheSeer. They both would better to do some growing up.
In their age it is about time to do so.
It is like with divorced couples - they also have this need to show the OTHER side how HAPPY they are without their former partners. SO FREE. Jesus. They definitely need to have some REAL problems.

I apologized for wasting your time.... and I meant it ironically.

many finn's don't speak english that well, in fact tarja isn't good in english when she try to formulate what's on her mind, i noticed that when I met her and maybe she was in a good mood, thats why the laughing. you're always so negative, instead of focusing on the answers maybe you should blame the interviwer for once, they are the one to ask the same questions over and over again.

  7. These comments made me laugh harder then the (*laughs*) words in the interview. They where pretty annoying..
It isn't bad that she can't speak good English, I'm not fluent either, but still.. everytime when she speaks English it annoys me. I mean: she makes all different hights with her voice
and is laughing almost every question since she's gone solo.. (or at least in all the interviews I've seen, and that are a lot.)
But stil I think she's an awesome singer. I just don't like the songs she composed on her own. And the Nightwish fuck ups she makes (like the music from nemo she screwed up)
And I have to agree with mermaid again. Every interview after the split up Tarja says how awesome it is the have freedom.. (I've searched it and it is true).

And now on-topic: I hope the songs are really different. That would make the chance that I'm actually going to buy it and see her live again bigger. Since I only liked 3 songs from My Winter Storm and I hate the versions of most of the nightwish songs she does live.

O yeah: and why I'm giving a reaction on it while I'm not so into Tarja anymore: I hope she changes and will turn into the awesome singer I heard when she was still with Nightwish, but know on her solo carreer.

  8. peace... tarja says what she wants, the way she wants!
@mermaid: if you don't like her don't read
@the seer: when tuomas told you he was in love with her?

  9. I love Tarja, but it's true, she doesn't make sense in this interview... she says the new album is a continuance process from My Winter Storm and then says it's gonna be radically different... she contradicts herself in the very same sentence.

of course, I understand the problem is that she has difficulties expressing herself on a foreign language, and is doing her best effort to put her thoughts into words.

she probably laughed because she didn't know how to express herself and wasn't sure how to answer, or because she felt nervous. Or maybe she just felt it was funny and wanted to laugh. come on, don't be hard on her with no reason!

and honestly, I don't know why Tuomas and Nightwish have to be mentioned in every single article about Tarja and viceversa... it's been 4 years, let it go.

I'm seeing her this Sunday! :)
    can't wait!

  10. Ok, i don´t speak english but i understood everything she said, she always laugh a lot, always, i don´t know why come here just to insult her, I really love her solo album and I know exaclly what she´s talking about the next album and why going to follow the same line, and what she want to say about the "radical changes", maybe you gays should listen her album cse I can see you don´t even Know her like an artist, and how is her music and why she going to make changes. I saw her concert in México few days ago and she always talk spanish. I really enjoy her concert and how she and her band play songs from her solo album is amazing. Maybe you are only Nightwish fans, cse you are always attacking her. And i´m asking my self why cse Tarja is one thing and Nightwish is other thing. That happend 4 years ago.

  11. I don't understand why people keep complaining about Tarja saying she is free and so on and so forth. Yes, she already said that a 1000 times but its just because they keep asking her the same questions 'How do you feel now on solo?'. I mean, come on.

    People stop being such hypocrites

  12. mermaid, if you are a fan of NW and their current singer ,than don't waste your time on some puny Tarja ,she doesn't worth your attention cause she is always bad. Go and be happy with NW news ,there are lot of them and NW and Olzon unlike bad nasty Tarja never do wrong, lol

  13. I don't understand why some people accuse Tarja of constantly saying how free she feels. For the last year journalists have been asking the same questions.
Like with Tuomas.I found some interviews, many of them here, where he says the EXACT same things with the Greek Metal Hammer.
If they are being asked the same questions, they must answer the same things.Or they will end up being untrustworthy.

She DID that in Nightwish. i might pick up this album since its supposed 2 have heavier songs. its interesting 2 see wat she can do on her own.

  15. She used to laugh a lot when she was interviewed during the Nightwish Era too. She is like that all the time and her English is not fluent but I understood everything she said.
I think that if you don´t like the way Tarja speaks/writes or manages her career then you shouldn´t read this kind of article.
It´ll just get you and Tarja fans angry, as well as some MFF staff.
