NIGHTWISH Singer Performs With SWEDISH RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA; Video Available

NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon performed on August 13, 2009 with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra at a special concert in Stockholm, Sweden as part of the Stockholms Kulturfestival (Stockholm's Culture Festival). According to Anette, "The evening [was] in the theme of Sweden-Finland and it [was] called Suomi Safari. There [was] a big symphonic orchestra, choir and more soloists that have something to do with Finland."

Video footage of Anette's performance (including soundcheck) can be viewed below.

Olzon recently wrote a blog entry on her official web site where whe talked about singing technique. She said, "It's hard to go in to exactly what I do when I sing since some things are 'by nature' and just come naturally but, of course, a lot of things are what I have learned earlier in vocal lessons and also during my career as the singer in NIGHTWISH where my voice is needed to be able to sing many high-pitched songs for 1.5 hours many nights a week.

"First of all, what I use most when I sing is a technique called 'belting.' For you who don't know what kinda vocal sound types normally are talked about, there are different sounds and techniques to use when singing. This technique is a way to come very high up by pushing the vocal cords together, slamming them against each other, so that no air at all can leak through. If any air leaks through, it can make the voice soar and aching. I do this technique also by thinking that I lift my upper lift upwards, kinda showing my teeth and a good sound to practise for it is to imitate an evil witch. You know the evil laughter. Also imitating a car like: öhrn, öhrn, öhrn... as a car accelerating forward. These things make me lift the lip and close the cords. Of course there are so many more things to do to make this technique perfect but that's an easier way to explain what I do."

Do they have a Swedish version?

She's a mediocre singer at best

  9. Good surprise...First time I hear her not doing her pop singing (well almost not doing...). Let's be honest, these songs are nice to listen.
Still she has problems with tempo and rythme (as on most of her live performances).

  12. I truly enjoyed the convulsion she had in her left hand.
No idea what the song is about, but if it is about convulsion in neck and in hand she did really a good job.

Though, I did not like the auhmmm, auhmm, auhmm, she added to lyrics - sounds way to artifficially to me - mainly in the end of first song.

All and all - I sould say Tarja´s version was better. But to be very honest EVERY Idol female contestant would do at least better job, so. Thinking about that few of our singers would do a better job - and I do NOT think we have any good singers at all.
"UUUU, eeeej, aaaa, eeeej, oooj, eeeej, ooooooo, uuuuuuu. " great lyrics by the way. :-)

  15. After hearing that version of Meadows of Heaven (despite the fast tempo in the beggining, but remember, it's the orchestra doing it too), I don't understand how anyone can deny her ability to sing.

Kuolema was nice, despite the Finnish. I don't even speak the language, but even I could tell she has the worst accent ever XD.

And because she can sing, I added few links here:

There´s seems to be some kind of a competions among you talibans on which one can be the most annoying and most hateful. You´re on top.

  28. @Wrathchild

You childishly says thing like Tarja chicken plucks and Tarja sucks and then you call Mermaid mean

Well, at least Mermaid is entertaining in her inslults to Tuomas and Anette

As you noticed there is not an unchecked topic of Tuomas and Anette fangirling (or fanboying) on this site, if you want that go to NW site

Tuomas opened the can of worms when he fired Tarja over the internet and proceded to talk about her character, therefore his life and character are fair game, and as for Anette, well she's making alot of money for an average performer, so she should just enjoy her 15 minutes of fame and avoid reading the internet, because the truth obviously hurts her

I don't care why they fired her, it's the way the fired her, they showed their true character in slandering someone over the internet so they could continue with NW and make Nw more popular so they could continue to get richer and have drinking parties and fangirls (Ewo would have a hard time getting lucky on his own, lets face it)

You are the fool for falling for your boy Tuomas' bullcrap

You do not fire a person over the internet unless you are a person of low character, there is no justifacation for it, get your rose colored glasses of dear fangirl

"Tuomas opened the can of worms when he fired Tarja over the internet and proceded to talk about her character,"

This is what comes back as a boomerang now -

this band is judged by the same standards they used on Tarja.

    Fair is fair.

Even Bible says: "do not judge when you do not wish to be judged."

You just can not expect you will be free to judge other people and nobody will ever judge you back. :-)

  39. -Nobody is "better" singer than other because it's always matter of own music taste and nobody's taste is not "better" than others.

-You like or not like the singer and anything else is pointless because it's so fucking stupid to argue about music taste (ex. who is "better") and nobody cares what each other like or not like.

-It's also so stupid to compare singers because each singer is individual person and has own style to use the voice.

-Everybody can listen and like what ever they want but nobody has right to judge or be nasty to artists and people who represents other music. If you like it then enjoy it but if you don't like it then leave it alone!

SO...you can say by yourself inside your head that this is better than that other music TO ME but that don't mean it's "better" to other people.Example in song contest the winner is not "better" than others but it wins because in that case major of people like it so it gets more votes but still these people using OWN MUSIC TASTE INSIDE THEIR HEADS TO LIKE OR NOT LIKE THE SINGER!...so in this case (which is not competition) you simply like Anette or Tarja or maybe both like I do but NOBODY IS "BETTER" THAN OTHER SO STOP TALKING BULL SHIT ABOUT THAT!

  43. To insist that there is no "better" or "worse" in music and that it is all down to personal taste is not terribly original; all it does is prove a person's ignorance.

You know who the people are who claim to listen to and like all music? Those who know the least of it, are only familiar with mainstream pop, and are not even aware of anything else. That's not open-minded - that's as close-minded as it gets.

In events like song contests where audience votes are collected all that happens is that herd mentality and group dynamics come to play - it couldn't be further from individual taste. Most people have never developed anything close to it - their taste has been formed through the mainstream media.

The denial of objectivity leads to more hypocrisy and internal contradictions - with your egalitarian (and ultimately nihilistic) attitude which makes you insist that no-one is ever wrong, why do you ever attack people for disagreeing? Because if no-one is wrong, people who disagree with you aren't wrong, either. A way to kill every discussion!

Also, you aren't allowed to criticise or complain about anyone or anything, then. Even me, if I steal something. from you, for example. Because after all, it's just a matter of opinion. As I said: No objective values, morality etc. = nihilism.

Religious fanatics are like that, too, when they are challenged by logic - they will ultimately retire to nihilism and rejection of logic, philosophical skepticism, solipsism or other extreme stances - or sophistry - but fail to stick by them.

Wrathchild is so pathetic. First he uses Donald Duck as an insult, then, after suffering an argumentative blow, he rows back and tries to re-interpret his insult opposite from his original intention.

And are you aware of the fact that there are many people who listen to not-mainstream music, from jazz to prog to metal and who can also value "some" mainstream artists? I don't think you are respecting these people.
Not everything which you label as mainstream is absolute shit. A music lover is able to appreciate both non-commercial sophisticated music and more simple pop music.
There are simple "mainstream" songs which will never tire you.

Phantom wrote on 25.08.2009 at 21:33

  45. As I said, musical egalitarialism also hugely disrespects the talent and hard work necessary to become a highly accomplished musician, as opposed to being a hobby musician who may not even be able to read notes.

Less than a century ago, before the advent of radio, amateur music was ubiquitous - almost everyone sang or played an instrument. Many people had a piano at home, too, and could play it. They bought sheet music of popular songs - including opera and classical - and performed it in the family.

For this reason, people appreciated music, and especially classical, a lot more, and didn't take so many things for granted.

I totally agree with this. I am very critical of shows like American Idol because they are so geared towards the lowest common denominator, even though they purport to be about individuality, personality, etc. That is utter BS. They are totally about the herd mentality and it further pushes fringe music into the fringe.

In a similar vein, I am very resentful when there is a big Canadian event (like, for instance, Canada Day celebrations) and the organizers automatically trot out all the country music twangers - whom I cannot stand. This is also geared towards the lowest common denominator and assumes that all Canadians must love country music on some level. These events actually totally fail to represent the musical diversity in this country, and diversity is something we all - apparently - are supposed to be so proud of over here.

CanuckFan wrote on 25.08.2009 at 23:01

  52. CanuckFan: I do resent how commercial/mainstream/pop music offers watered-down versions of many other kinds of music - when I finally get to listen to the real thing, I feel so cheated believing all the time that it was something that is a lot less distinctive, rich and varied.

Of course, as long as you never get to experience the real thing, you think everything is OK - you listen to, say, Enya and think that's all there is to ambient, or celtic music. You listen to schmaltzy, sentimental, trivial schlager with a very limited emotional palette and mistake it for real, genuine folk music, you listen to Tokio Hotel and mistake it for visual kei, you mistake Green Day for punk - or mistake Slipknot for death metal, or Evanescence for gothic rock or even opera metal, for that matter - that's where the misunderstanding ultimately stems from where people think they are so open-minded and listen to such a lot of different music, but they have no idea. It's a pity.

Really, different music genres are like different cultures, and what commercial music does is appropriating these and stripping them of their authentic cultural context as well as all the rough edges and un-easy and subversive aspects. When I was younger, I never quite understood what texts meant when they said such things, but now I see the whole industry similarly critically.

Country music as a bare token like you describe is also not something I support - it's supposed to be living music within a community, not something like an exhibit in a museum, or even worse, a way to make money. That's stealing folk music from the folk.

Lately, I've read about the minstrel shows of the 19th century. I think they were really the first time this sort of cultural appropriation happened in a grand scale; the conscious deception of the audience, where they were offered a sanitised image of the life of black slaves: a mere caricature. Now we've got "gangstas" who offer us an "authentic" (but in reality, glorified) view of their life in a ghetto they've probably never even seen.

  54. CanuckFan: An additional thought - how are First Nations represented at events such as Canada Day?

A fascinating factoid I've just encountered: !Rush currently place forth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band."

Rock bands I know that are from Canada are Steppenwolf (didn't realise that they are from Canada, actually), Rush, Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend, 3 Inches of Blood (humm, didn't know that before either), UnexpecT, Protest the Hero (interesting), Phideaux, Godspeed You! Black Emperor ... and Loreena McKennitt, of course, if you count her as rock. James LaBrie is Canadian, I knew that. Pretty cool list.

GY!BE were once thought to be a band of terrorists by the US police. Haha.

Bryan Adams, Alanis Morrissette, Nickelback, Céline Dion and Paul Anka - I wasn't aware that they are all Canadian. Somehow we Europeans are never really aware if someone is from Canada. In those cases, it's probably for the better, huh?

I've heard that Québec is supposed to be more metal-friendly that the rest of Canada, can you confirm that?

Re. "Really, different music genres are like different cultures, and what commercial music does is appropriating these and stripping them of their authentic cultural context as well as all the rough edges and un-easy and subversive aspects."

    This I agree with 100%.

While on the one hand, the more commercially successful bands/musicians might be making inroads for their genre in a mass kind of way, often they have to water themselves down to gain any kind of mass appeal. It's a typical catch 22.

Unfortunately, I think this all speaks to a much wider societal issue, which is labeling and stereotyping of anything remotely different from cultural "norms." This is what I was getting to with my comment about country music in Canada. We have a ton of metal in Canada - a TON of it - yet it is at best a subculture. When the organizers of these big events, like Canada Day celebrations, get fucking Shania Twain on their bills but exclude The Agonist - that's thumbing your nose at an entire genre of music that actually has a decent following in the nation - just not a mainstream following. Just because it's METAL people assume things about the music, the musicians, and the fans. Meanwhile, we are supposed to be celebrating our diversity, and I get totally pissed off because I think it's a sham.

Anyway, I spent all my childhood as a choir singer - in a very good choir, actually.

I have never considered me to be a big singer, though, as nobody of us (in the choir) did. We might have a bit too much of respect to REAL singers we sometimes accompanied. Maybe that was the problem.

Your belief that just to stay on stage makes you a good singer is very optimistic. But it does not work that way.

If it does, there would be hundred of milions of singers in the world - and who would do some real work?

Tarja - on the other hand - does belong to a stage - but nobody denied THAT.

  60. Almagest

put that into more fancy words:
"As I said, musical egalitarialism also hugely disrespects the talent and hard work necessary to become a highly accomplished musician,"

but that is what I tried to explain.

Our cleaning ladies can sing - I think better then Princess (next week we will have a party so i will show them this performance)

    :-)

and I can sing, too. But we have a common sense and I seriously doubt they ever thought about singing on a stage.

I might honestly tell you, I did not.
    I never ever liked caraoke...

  61. @ Almagest

First nations are always well-represented at the national events; I cannot speak to smaller events as they usually aren't televised. I love First Nations music!

I didn't know Steppenwolf was Canadian, so we learn something new every day!

Loreena McKennit is most definitely NOT ROCK. She is folk/New Age.

The province of Quebec is indeed the metal hub of Canada. There are smaller pockets in other places, but in a country as large as Canada, the "scene" elsewhere outside of Quebec isn't as well-developed. I have no idea why Quebec would be the hub of metal, there must be something about the culture there that is more accepting. Politically, Quebec is the most left wing province in the country - maybe that has something to do with it - attitudes are different in a society that leans farther to the left politically.

Shania Twain is Canadian. Avril Lavigne is Canadian. Sarah McLachlan is Canadian.

  62. Mermaid, don't you ever take any time off? 90% of the comments from Nightwish news are practically yours.
You might wanna check some other bands too. Or get a job. Or a life. Or go and take a walk. It's going to ventilate your brain a bit.

  64. Anette sucks big time with Kuolema. Well, another proof what a poor and weak singer she is (((

Kevin wrote on 03.09.2009 at 18:05

  65. Is it somebody tormenting a cat or it is just Anette trying to sing once again something she can not sing?

  67. this is a sad time, where music is bastardized by freaks of pop; Her head soon will explode like a pumpkin if she keeps following this way...
