NIGHTWISH Singer Interviewed At Stockholm's Culture Festival; Video Available

NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon was interviewed on August 13, 2009 prior to her performance with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra at a special concert in Stockholm, Sweden as part of the Stockholms Kulturfestival (Stockholm's Culture Festival). According to Anette, "The evening [was] in the theme of Sweden-Finland and it [was] called Suomi Safari. There [was] a big symphonic orchestra, choir and more soloists that have something to do with Finland."

Watch the chat in three parts below.

Olzon recently wrote a blog entry on her official web site where whe talked about singing technique. She said, "It's hard to go in to exactly what I do when I sing since some things are 'by nature' and just come naturally but, of course, a lot of things are what I have learned earlier in vocal lessons and also during my career as the singer in NIGHTWISH where my voice is needed to be able to sing many high-pitched songs for 1.5 hours many nights a week.

"First of all, what I use most when I sing is a technique called 'belting.' For you who don't know what kinda vocal sound types normally are talked about, there are different sounds and techniques to use when singing. This technique is a way to come very high up by pushing the vocal cords together, slamming them against each other, so that no air at all can leak through. If any air leaks through, it can make the voice soar and aching. I do this technique also by thinking that I lift my upper lift upwards, kinda showing my teeth and a good sound to practise for it is to imitate an evil witch. You know the evil laughter. Also imitating a car like: öhrn, öhrn, öhrn... as a car accelerating forward. These things make me lift the lip and close the cords. Of course there are so many more things to do to make this technique perfect but that's an easier way to explain what I do."

  1. haha @ 2:10 part 1 TARJA VS. ANETTE YOUTUBE VIDEOS FTW!

Hayley wrote on 22.08.2009 at 02:42

  2. @ heyley: Those are so great to watch. And the best part is that Tarja comes out as the winner in more then 80 percent of the movies. And the ones where Anette wins are mostly made by people who also listen to Britney Spears and co. Not that that is bad or something. But it says something about her being in a METAL band an being adored by so mutch people who don't even listen to metal ;-). Even people who claim that they support the new era of nightwish and listen to metal agree that Tarja sounds way better live and on record. Altough live isn't fair to compare them. Because if you where in the audience, you actually could hear Tarja and Marco sing. Know with Anette, you will only hear the hep hep hep thing (wich ruines the music if you ask me.. if she is the great singer she says she is, she couldn't;t need that 'cauze the audience would go with her without asking) and marco wonderful voice. If she'd cut out the hep hep then it would be almost perfect. You'd only hear marco =)

But I have to give her some credit though. With Alyson Avenue, she sounds great! So it isn't that she can't sing.. She just shouldn't be in a metal band like Nightwish.

  3. damn! what happened to her pretty face? she looks really weird... like swollen or something, especially her mouth... I just hope she won't go overboard with botox and stuff like that... it makes people look like ventriloquists' dolls.

Blackwood wrote on 22.08.2009 at 13:33

  4. No botox, she is alergic ...

    C. wrote on 22.08.2009 at 13:56

  5. I like how she talks about everything, and mostly, I think that it's very telling that from all the guys in the band the only one she mentions by name is Marco. It always seemed that she was relieved to have him there, like he's the only one she can talk to (here in Argentina, she thanked him for being the best company she had on tour, and they hugged). She sounds very candid here... I know this is just a personal thought, but I think she always sounds like she's too naive to lie willingly.

Blackwood wrote on 22.08.2009 at 14:32

  6. Marco has kids? really? or did I misinterpreted what Anette said?
    I'm surprised.

MFF Staff: Yes Marco has kids. It is something he has always been proud of. Why are you surprised about it?

"Even people who claim that they support the new era of nightwish and listen to metal agree that Tarja sounds way better live and on record."

I'm mostly an "old-era" fan but I don't agree that Tarja sounds way better live, when she was singing in Nightwish.
I don't think that it's Anette's fault if many people who don't listen to metal started to approach Nightwish music (since Once release actually) and I don't think it's necessairly a bad thing.
It's not everything black or white :P

Phantom wrote on 22.08.2009 at 15:08

  8. thanks for the quick answer!
I'm surprised because never in any of the interviews I read he happened to mention it. Maybe I didn't read the most personal ones, as he always talked about Tarot or Nightwish mostly. I guess I never thought that someone so busy (when he's not on tour with one band he's working with another) could have enough spare time to have a family. It's admirable that he can manage to find time for everything! x)

Blackwood wrote on 22.08.2009 at 16:00

  9. @ Erika

It is true. Where I live (USA), I have noticed that Nightwish is already becoming more and more popular and most of their "new" fans do not even like metal. I know a few ppl like this. That's scary because I most recently discovered NW, but soon they will be put into that category of the "mainstream". But it's Anette's poppy vocal style and NW's attempt at getting big here that is creating this.

So yes, they are starting to lose their "metal" status. I anxiously await what they will sound like on the next album. But judging from this interview when Anette said that Tuomas will begin to write songs in her "comfort zone", that worries me. It may even more poppish and mainstream than before. We'll see.

James wrote on 22.08.2009 at 18:48

  10. I actually thought this was a pretty good interview. Anette was candid and articulate (for a non-native English speaker) and she seemed engaged with the interviewer, who asked questions in a way that wasn't terribly boring. Considering the fact that her beloved cat had just died, she did well and appeared thoughtful and present.

And I think she looks HEALTHY.

CanuckFan wrote on 22.08.2009 at 19:23

  11. @Blackwood

She stated in her blog that her lips and eyes were swollen from Herpes

Phoenix wrote on 22.08.2009 at 20:13

  12. Yes, i agree. i dont think her vocals really fit the sound and feeling that Nightwish has always brought. they lost the sort of dark melancholic METAL sound that Anette cant really produce. (take Sleeping Sun, if they created another version and video of Anette singing wouldnt that look awfully strange?) that is the reason so many outsiders (non metal fans :]) are starting to like Nightwish more. Anettes voice sounds more pop, a big change from Tarja. if you ask me that is the reason why people are creating so many Tarja vs. Anette videos. when people make those videos its like comparing POP vs. METAL in a sense where 80% are going to choose metal (Tarja)

Hayley wrote on 22.08.2009 at 20:13

  13. @ Phoenix

She has HERPES?!? No wonder she looked bad here..

James wrote on 22.08.2009 at 21:01

  14. @Haley and @Erika. Seriously get a life and stop Anette bashing. This areguement is 3 years old, if you don't like Anette, stop talking about her vs Tarja. Simple as that. So move on Tarja isn't coming back

Stephanie wrote on 22.08.2009 at 21:28

  15. @ James

Don't panic - I have run into this with European friends of mine, too! They call cold sores herpes over there, which is technically correct because cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. It's just that over here in North America, having herpes means something VERY different! ;)

CanuckFan wrote on 22.08.2009 at 22:20

  16. @Stephanie i am not bashing Anette. I never stated that she sounds bad. i, and more then half the nightwish fans think Tarja was just better for the BAND. once again as i said, i think the comparison videos are pretty silly since they sound nothing alike. we respect Anette and her fans, Anette is a very good singer. but that is our opinion, learn to respect it. this has nothing to do with Anette herself. i am talking about Anette in Nightwish.

Hayley wrote on 23.08.2009 at 02:11

  17. @ CanuckFan

    Thank goodness! :D

    @ Stephanie

It's true that Tarja was better for NW than Anette, much like how Bruce Dickinson was better than Blaze Bailey for Iron Maiden. But whatever, we all have our opinions. I'm not in the mood for such debates right now! LOL ;)

James wrote on 23.08.2009 at 03:43

  18. @ Stephanie: I'm also not really bashing on Annette. Just like a lot of other people here, I just think Nightwish could better find a different singer. Anette is a good singer, just not for Nightwish. Like I said in my first post.
And if you read reviews from concerts, like for example, the reviews from their Graspop Metal Meeting performance, both Belgium and Dutch reviewers agree that Anette doens't suits Nightwish. There are also some reviews in, for example, metal hammer UK who reviewed other concerts of them and they also agree that it is time that her try out period is over and they both move on in different ways. And if there are so many magazine's and fans who are saying that.. that says something right?

And again, I don't hate Anette. I don't think she's a bad singer and I did give her a change inside Nightwish. I even visited 2 times a nightwish gig and both times I was disappointed.
Anette is a great singer for bands like Alyson Avenue. But just not for Nightwish.

  19. Hardly managed to listen to first part.
Whining, complaining - I just do not get it. If she is SUFFERING SO MUCH, why does not quit the job? Many girls would kill to get it - so, what is the problem?

She could leave this job, start some normal daily job, receive some small salary (I think she has no qualiffication at all) and her suffering would dissapear... And NW will hire some normal good- looking girl, who will be all happy that her dreams come true.

As for her clothing - this Versace dress chose her stylist for her (if I remember correctly from her blog). She looks like a woman, so I must say that her stylist did a good job.

Coming to think of it - I have no stylist and I never wore Versace. I just hope that all of you are really sorry for me now... :-(

But - we should thank NW for their mentioning Tarja - they did not for 3 weeks or so and I started to be stressed by that..

And. We MOVED on. We are not NW fans anymore. Where would you like to move us further?

These are comments to article -" NIGHTWISH singer inerviewed".... As you are not a fan, why on earth are you reading these articles?? I cannot stand Lars Ulrich and I never read his interviews.... Why bother??

Oh really? How come I've never seen their faces or I don't know their names (except Jukka's wife) , do you know something about Marco's wife for example? I mean you care soooo muuuuuchhh about this band that you know so many things :D

    Lol I'm laughing right now.

You didn't have the balls so far to tell me why on earth you are still giving a shit about Nightwish :D

MissyE, mermaid is probably bored so she has to put her nose into Tuomas' private life. For example she is eager to know about his love life for some misterious reasons.
She's also eager to criticize Nightwish for whatever they say, I think that even if they would say "Tarja is the best, we are assholes" she would find something to whine about.

As for Phantom´s persuasion that I am "eager to know about his love life" - I never was and I do not remember to show slightliest interest here.

We just agreed with Seer (where is that guy for SO LONG?) that Maestro has no love life at all - which came as a relief, actually. Should we be bombarded with Maestro ´s achievements in this area - it might be too much fun for normal people.

I mean - look what he has chosen like a singer. And now imagine what he would chose like for a lover. Brrr.

Well, I don't know about love life, I think private life is private and that's it, but I have visited several rock clubs in Helsinki (I live in the area) and both I and my friends have wittnessed Tuomas with certain lady e. g. in other bands' concerts. People in rock club circles tend to respect people's privacy and don't call yellow press journalist about the things they have seen...
I really feel sorry for Mermaid as she seems to be a really upset and angry about certain things. I hope that doesn't take too much of her energy away from things that really matters like personal life, work etc.

Lol , right. You answered by yourself posting this rant here. You and someone else kept constantly wondering about his "lack" of love life, as it would be SUCH an INTERESTING subject. And above all, a thing to bash. I think it's extremely low for a grown up person who keeps saying how cool and smart you are.

"And now imagine what he would chose like for a lover. Brrr. "
Belle and Tarja are not so bad :P

"I do not remember myself to talk about Marco, Emppu or Jukka. "
An indirect proof you have a crush on the man with the white chest of wonders. There is a thin line between love and hate :)))

  31. MissyE,

I honestly do not take care - you could see Maestro DAILY with three ladies and seven boys - all naked and I would not care less. His "white chest of wonders" is just not turning me on.

But it is nice of you to care for me, though I am just fine. Overhelmed, actually and about to explode because I am celebrating and I am pushed every now and there to eat and drink because of that - and as far as I have one stomach only I do not feel too well. :-(

Naturally, I MUST because I am at work and I just can not ignore all these congratulations. I even had to ask my secretary to go to the city and buy some more cakes in order not to look like costs saving here.

So, with this one exception I am just fine. I just hope tomorrow all these celebrations will be over - 4 days are 4 days - and there is a work to do.

God only knows why do you think I am angry? Because next time I will be angry I can let you know so you can feel sorry for me. Suit yourself.

    But - not today. :-)

I had to push a tear back into my eye.

Still, I do not love and do not hate within Finnland.

I do not take care. I do not take care for milions of people - Maestro is just one of oh so many. Hope he would survive that - but I do not expect him to care for me, either, so.
    :-)

And what you call "proof"? We stated openly that we are The demolition band. You need no proof to prove what we stated openly.

We have been demolition band all the time - and all the time we critizised Maestro and Princess.
What kind of proof you found to prove what we stated ourselves???
Next time you will try to prove that Tero is Tero?

As for Tarja and Belle - I did not attend your discussions about that. I just said that Tarja knew for sure why she did not chose Maestro.
Well, Maan Mainion was never my piece of cake so I had no problems to understand Tarja on that issue. But that was all.

mermaid wrote on 24.08.2009 at 15:44

that is not true. I am not wondering about this at all. I would be really surprised, though, if Maestro would find him normal, good looking woman, psychologically stable and have like normal relationship with her.

Then i will be truly impressed. But as for mow - no. No surprises, no wonderings. Sorry.

mermaid wrote on 24.08.2009 at 15:47

So, even if he would look good (he does not - not to me - because as I explained somewhere here, guys who turn me on look differently) and even if he would be normal (and as I said many times any Maan Mainiot is not what I call a fine decoration of my bedroom),

  46. And another pearl from our poetry expert.
    Phantom read somewhere that:

"I mean, if it's all about sex a man can hope someone like you would shut up most of the time as far as the sex is good. :)) "

and had an urgent need to share this with me.

I would actually like to know why would any of men I knew want me to "shut up most of the time" and how they will check that?

I never dated any of my colleagues. And therefore I just do not see a reason why a man, who is in his job would want me to shut up in my job. And how he would know whether I am shutting up or not.

Men I know used to hope I would not be too busy next week.

But this might be different for you, poetry readers....

ah you know I am not going to criticize you since I find it pointless & this is not your personal site :) so no reason to do it

    - this time I was not talking only about you & your co. - I should make my point more clear- , but generally

If you look for instance on YT or whatever else you will find that many people dont say that Tuomas & Anete suck but NW suck :)

PS you must have very short memory dear mermaid saying that you / your co. dont criticize other members of the band. For instance Marco was quite hot topic here as well & I am not talking about the article where he was drunk :)

    - but you know why you criticize only Anette, Tuomas & Marco because they are the only ones who give interviews so I do believe if Emppu & Jukka gave inerview there will be remarks as well so no matter what they will do / say some people will always find something to criticize :)) and that is what no one can change thanks to god otherwise there wont be any fun on this site :D

Let me guess, you are also a sexologist so you could explain me how to make a baby :)) . Theoretical or practical lessons? :)

Which is the majority of the so-called "TRUE Nightwish fans" (according to the new definition, originating from Maestro) nowadays.

  54. Funny how people keep posting ad hominems against mermaid; that's what happens when people run out of arguments.

Also funny how other posters who post negative comments on NW news are never attacked along the lines of "get a life", which is what all of this bickering against mermaid really boils down to. I just wonder how those incessant defenders get along with their lives. They must be horribly bored constantly dealing with such a "boring person". Why don't they ignore her just like they expect her to ignore NW news? Perhaps they are secretly fans of mermaid and the glorious demolition crew? ;-)

Ah, don't you love the double standards and faulty - I mean interesting - logic of the apologists, mermaid?

Almagest wrote on 25.08.2009 at 05:43

  55. Ravisk: Not really. Children of Bodom have stopped being cool long ago. They were a nice power metal band with melodeath influences and rather annoying black-metal-ish vocals, now they sound more like Korn with hardcore shouts, not even extreme vocals. Same story as with NW - they've totally sold out and even abandoned their trademark vocals just because those do not sell on the US market, where both bands are keen to break. Apocalyptica too - they were really special in the beginning, now, with drums and vocals, they are just like any other rock band, but instrumental pure cello rock just doesn't sell on the (especially US) mainstream market! It's always the same story. I suppose that's why the band (NW) laughed so insecurely when they were asked about Death Magnetic - even Metallica have got tired of the commercial crap and returned to making heavy fucking metal!

Almagest wrote on 25.08.2009 at 06:04

i dont get on this site because i have nothing better to do, most of us get on this site because we love Finnish metal, enjoy learning about it, and take pride in what our opinions and views are when it comes to bands. thats really how all metalheads should be like. i think telling mermaid she has constant PMS is pretty lame, maybe she just has strong opinions on things.

  59. @ Almagest

You're right. Haven't you noticed that all of the best bands sell out nowadays? Is money that important to them that they have to sound as close to Evanescence as humanly possible? Six years ago, NW and Eva would never be a likely comparison (symphonic power metal vs. commerical rock), but now with Anette it's actually possible to make that comparison. A song like "Cadence of Her Last Breath" is a good example of an Evanescence knockoff! X,D

However, I think I first noticed this sort of "sell-outness" of NW as early as Century Child even; Tarja's vocals got less classical and more mainstream, plus the guitar and keyboard work got way simplier. Every album after CC got worse musically too. It's not just Anette's fault 100%. Hell, a goddamn orchestra does most of the work for them now!!!! XD I don't think NW will ever go back to the days of Oceanborn when they used to play to their fullest abilities with soul and passion. Wishmaster was probably their last "great" album IMO.

"I suppose that's why the band (NW) laughed so insecurely when they were asked about Death Magnetic - even Metallica have got tired of the commercial crap and returned to making heavy fucking metal!"

Damn straight, pure fucking metal!! m/ Metallica's new album, while not their best, is better than their last 4 albums and is WAY better than Dark Passion Play. Of course they feel insecure about it! They are practically giving up their roots and are beginning to play some lame music. (Of course if it wasn't for Metallica, Nightwish would not exist because Tuomas was converted into a metalhead after seeing them in concert in 1993) The next album of NW will probably be even worse than the last one..

But what kind of person I would be if I would not have strong opinions on my life - on the way I am actually living it?

It was not the first time kido misspelled "mystery" as "mistery"

and that attracted my attention. Let us see who does spell mystery as "mistery".
    Russian:zagadka
    Czech/slovak spelling: mysterium
    German: Das Mysterium
    English: mystery
    French: myst?re
    Hungarian: talány

    But:

    Italian: mistero

But I realized that some of song are quite nice. I can manage through "I am not a Jesus", but I deffinitely do not need to hear this particular song more times in one go.

Excuse me if I find their (and your) behaviour not mature at all :)) , sometimes it's quite amusing how you criticize even the smallest bullshits and details. I mean, it's such a manic work!

As for Metallica new album. It's nothing compared to the oldest material. It's better than St. Anger , I like it, but they will never go back to the roots. They still released such a radio-friendly single for example.
By the way, Tuomas commented that St. Anger is crap, so your opinion doesn't make too much sense. :)

James: I really liked Tarja vocals on Century Child and Once, I think she can come up with really emotional vocals when she doesn't use just her "operatic" voice. I don't know why people find it so commercial and so bad.

your right, a lot of bands are selling out.i love Children of Bodom they are 1 of my favorite bands but id give them 1 more of their own original album to decide total sell out status.
right now i think the biggest sell outs are Black Tide. Their first album was great and THEYRE SO YOUNG! they couldve had a great metal life ahead of them...then..then they go on tour with fucking Escape the Fate. can you say POSERS??? now there on the Warped Tour(fuckin emo scene kids..) and i dont know if i'll be able to like them ever again.. in NW's case i think i'll give them 1 more album becuase Dark Passion Play was ok but if i mistaken them for Evanesence on the next album like said, that would REALLY suck.

    @ mermaid

No, Evanescence is just bland commerical music to me. They have some of the most lame songs I ever heard (Sorry EVA fans). Vocally, Amy Lee is better than Anette of course, but musically NW is still far superior to them even. Has EVA ever wrote a song like TPATP from new NW? No, even though the lyrics are like "poor me, poor Tuomas", the music is still much more advanced than EVA. You only say that because you hate Anette. :p I don't like her either, but NW is still better than EVA. But yeah NW is becoming a commerical band too and their sound is similar to that of EVA, but they still outdo them. You may disagree, but that is what I think.

  86. mermaid: I've actually come up with the misspelling evidence long ago. :-)

Interesting how Phantom reveals him- or herself as just another fanboy or fangirl of the commercial approach. It's just the old recurring complaint "operatic vocals = too cold and technical, pop vocals = so much more emotional" that became stale years ago. Phantom is just like all those pop victims - they don't get that Tarja's operatic vocals are every bit as expressive and emotional, probably even more as her pop vocals are not that good and she must fall back on clichés when she has to hold back.

Also interesting how anyone who actually takes on Phantom's reasoning, "mature" discussion style, logic and coherence is unreasonable and immature. The only reason why he or she is OK with James is that he doesn't give him or her a hard time. :-)

Deep inside, I'm sure that Phantom loves us, as I said on another thread. Without, his or her life would be empty and boring. :-)

Everyone: Even full, uncompromising opera vocals can be emotional as hell - I recommend you guys to check out Patricia Petibon. When she sings Der Hölle Rache, you can FEEL her anger, it's almost frightening. Also on stage, she gives the impression that she is really into it. She proves the pet cliché of sullen, emotionally detached opera singers that outsiders (the kind of people who never make any effort to get into classical singing and stick to their prejudices - they just palpably love them) nurture entirely wrong.

That's show how superficial you are judging people. For instance, I think Anette vocals are not emotional at all (I know that you wanted to mean this with your rant) .
On some Wishmaster songs Tarja's vocals are amazing, on other Nightwish songs I prefer her less classical approach (EverDream for example). There is a thing called versatility, Almagest. And Tarja knows what it is.
So keep your shit about pop vocals to yourself. This rant is the proof you are quite narrow minded.
You classify whatever is "pop" (in the positive sense of the word) as shit, your view about music is just like the view of some "high-class" twat, the same people who would think Tarja wasted her classical career in a metal band and the same people who would label metal as shit. So you are not that different from the purists of classical music .

"Also interesting how anyone who actually takes on Phantom's reasoning, "mature" discussion style, logic and coherence is unreasonable and immature. The only reason why he or she is OK with James is that he doesn't give him or her a hard time"

So you are calling other people who agree with me immature? On which bases?
For instance, I don't agree with die-hard opinions "Anette rules, Tarja sucks" or "Nightwish rules" , because I don't like the new Nightwish so much and because I don't like Anette.

"Deep inside, I'm sure that Phantom loves us, as I said on another thread. Without, his or her life would be empty and boring. :-) "
Funny, that's the same thing I told to mermaid. You love me too deep inside :)) , you would have to argue just with the boring die-hards, there is no fun.

    Really funny guy.
What is more funny,is his taste in music.Well,my mistake, taste is subjective. His opinions in music,if you like.
He picked the most popish song on DDP after Amaranth and declared it "true metal".
(i actually believe that he also thinks that Death By April is metal too :P)

If just some guitars riffs make a song metal(because the only metal element in this song is guitar riffs) then we can delcare "Sound of The Underground" by Girls Aloud metal too.

ps.How much you would like to bet on the fact that if i get a comeback from wrathchild,it will be another brilliant example of his fan-tardiness and lack of arguments with his irrelevant answers and attacks, made by a person who becomes seriously hurt when someone doesn't like the Princess of the Kingdom of Shopping and Dutchess of the Duchy of Immaturity and Complete Lack of Culture?

Lyrics are very important to me - as much as the sound - and he has summed up some pretty key experiences in my life in like two lines. Not a lot of writers have that kind of impact on me.

Actually, there are a lot of huffy LP fans out there who were WTF-ing all over Minutes to Midnight because it was so different from their previous two albums. Sound familiar? :) But, I liked the change of pace and the thoughtfulness of the lyrics and the fact that they dared do something different.

Re. "For the Heart I Once Had."

I don't usually like to state opinions about NW's music per se (mainly because I don't enjoy people jumping down my throat, even in the virtual world, but hey, I'm having a good day so what the hell), but man, that is such a strange song to my ears and IMO the weakest on DPP. I've tried so hard to "get it" but I just don't.

I just happen to think Tarja's pop vocals are not anything special; that's definitely not her forte, nor her style. You just keep reading my posts in a superficial way and then accuse me of what you have interpreted into them.

  94. Ravisk: No idea who you mean by Anssi (Kippo, I presume?), I don't care for his opinion, no matter how long they know each other. Nor do I care for COB's covers. I like their early albums a bit, but that's all. (I much prefer the guitarwork in Sinergy - that's the only place where Kekkonen's skill was actually put to proper use.) I'd still love to listen to UneartheD; given the trend and what I've heard about it, it must be pretty amazing.

The fact that you even consider Emppu for the place of best Finnish guitarist, metal or otherwise (and prefer Trivium to Metallica! WTF), shows that you do not know very much about the subject. Please listen to Jari Mäenpää and learn.

I think that the only one whose vocals sound pussy lately is Laiho XD

James: I agree, some time ago I happened to hear Bring Me to Life on the radio in a shop again - I hadn't listened to them for a long time - and I was shocked how simplistic the music is - it's totally focused on the vocals, you could make an a cappella version and it wouldn't change anything really. On top, I can't hear any difference between Amy Lee and a random teen pop singer. At least, she seems to hit the notes she cares to hit. I was truly shocked because I didn't remember that song to be THAT dull.

Phantom: Oh, you can pidgeonhole me as a closeminded elitist as much as you want for saying that Evanescence are lame, but James again agrees with me there, strange, huh? Seems he's not that reasonable, mature or openminded, either.

1stly from what info I can get from Anssi Kippo, Kekkonen's guitar playing in his opnion is a shadow of the man who was shreding in STONE and dude it's InEartheD not UneartheD, Jumalauta. Well maybe you didn't hear the records as in on the spot like Anssi.

Jari Mäenpää is the best guitarist from Finland period! He's also way better than Alexi too, sorry Alexi fanboys but it's true. :p Emppu is okay, but he's rather average to me. Emppu however has a few good solos from NW (Gethsemane, Know Why the Nightingale Sings has 2 guitar solos, Romanticide, Ever Dream) and does a good job in Brother Firetribe, even though BF is not my cup of tea.

I know Emppu can play better than what he has been showing in NW on the last couple of albums though. I think Tuomas really doesn't want him to play a lot of lead guitar because it's not "cool" enough in mainstream music to play solos. That's why I hate mainstream music. Everything has to sound a certain way or else it's not accepted. Oh well. At least I have a choice to listen to what I want, and that is mainly why I am here on MFF. :)

Jari's good I've to hand him that but Alexi can rape him up in terms of his soloing options and quote from Anssi Kippo "Allu is one of the most gifted talents I have ever met... I never heard Marzi Nyman before, but I checked him out. He's okay from what I have heard, but he doesn't compare to what Jari Mäenpää does for Wintersun. I don't think Nyman could come up with a better solo than what Jari did on Winter Madness either. It seems that all he does is cover songs too, which is not good enough to be put among the elite guitarists either. But he is good no question, but the best in Finland? I don't think so... ;)

regarding this "topic": this "princess", "maestro" bashing is soo childish: OK, you don't like it. Point, but don't get so insulting. 116. Oceanwithin,

good to see you after all this time.

You do mind "Princess" and "Maestro´s" bashing and you count this as an insult.

But here you are wrong on that.

Nobody of us did create either "Princess" or " Maestro".

Maestro was called "Maestro" by finnish press and his minorbandmates. I personally remember princess calling Maestro "Maestro".
    To his face, actually.
It just attracted me, because I knew no other "Maestro" in this world.

As for Princess - I originally fought it was my idea - I started to call her "Princess" since she started to wear tiara.
She was in fact not the first princess with tiara I saw in my life - I quite remember Princess of Wales, to give you just one example.

But then Legeon explained me that Princess was long before me called "Princess" by her fans, so it was not me who came up with that.

Both nicknames came from people around them. Whether they are insults - well, it depends most probably on point of view you take.

mermaid wrote on 27.08.2009 at 11:24

  117. "Maestro was called "Maestro" by finnish press and his minorbandmates"

Mermaid, you are wrong. Anette used the nickname "maestro" a couple of time in some interviews. It wasn't mean as a serious monicker . So it's you and someone else making a big deal out of it, since Tuomas never called himself like this.
Stupid fangirls started to call him like that, it's the same as calling Tarja "angel". Ridiculous monickers fangirls give.
You never bash Tarja for using "Angel" as nickname on her official forum :)). How come?

Phantom wrote on 27.08.2009 at 12:04

  118. Phantom asked me:

"You never bash Tarja for using "Angel" as nickname on her official forum :)). "

Well, when she will start to wear wings on stage i most probably will start to call her an "angel". (Depends on what kind of wings)

I did not know Princess was called "Princess" on her forum, I just saw tiara she was wearing.

I did not call Maestro "Oceansould" untill he started to take his boat (named Oceansoul) with him on a stage.

If he will start to wear a crown on stage, then we might consider to call him a "king".

    It is called logic.

mermaid wrote on 27.08.2009 at 12:25

  119. Mermaid, no it's called "stupidity" and taking small things seriously :P

Tarja called herself Angel on her official forum and Marcelo even wrote about it in his answers, fans call her "angel".
    Where is the difference?
I mean, if I was a stupid fantard I would have said "Tarja acts like a diva because she changes her clothes 4 times for gig or because her mics matches her clothes" . Isn't it part of the show? just like the boat or the tiara or the fireworks? Arent those things called "visual effects"?
    What about Rammstein shows then?
I mean, the boat is ridiculous but not because of the "oceansoul" written on it. I think it's ridiculous calling Tarja "angel" and even more ridiculous that she choosed it as nickname :D . But since I'm not a stupid taliban (as you clearly are) , I'm not making a big deal out of it.

"I mean, the boat is ridiculous but not because of the "oceansoul""

    Seriously?You actually BELIEVE those things?
If the boat itself is funny,it's the sign that makes it ridiculous.
Not a part of the show, please.Part of the show were the rocks, not the boat with that sign.

Equally,Liv Kristine should sign ONLY on the Viking ship they use,AND put a "Sea Maid" sign on it.
David Bowie should appear in a castle named "The Duke".

Not to mention Iron Maiden. They should make Bruce sign from the cockpit of a 747(he's an airline pilot),with an "Air Raid Siren" sign on it.

To be honest,i find the "angel" thing kinda weird too.
But remember that fans call her that because of some certain songs.
Olzon wears that plastic tiara because of the "princess in the tower" verse. No one called her princess before that.

This shows how hypocrite you are :P . You are biased taliban to put it simple

Phantom wrote on 27.08.2009 at 14:28

  126. Legeon,

to chose the nickname "angel" is a bit strange, but you chose "Legeon" and I am "mermaid" here.

While i am still not wearing a tail, I think I am still quite normal.

So, while she is not wearing wings (though she should according to Phantom due to lack in visual effects caused by no wings at all)

we might believe she is quite OK.

To chose a nickname "angel" shows only that she is not so down-to-earth, modest, humble and shy as the rest of the band.

But this is no news because as we all know - she was kicked because of that.

So, now she (the bold ex-part of the band) has a nickname "angel"

and the humble, shy and down-to-earth part of band is wearing tiaras, boats with their nicknames in them and doing what Phantom so nicely called "visual effects".

i am looking forward to first wolf on their show, though.
Will that poor animal be seated close to the boat? -

No living creature naturally, that will be too cruel (dogs hear voices 4 times better then people, so living animal would get crazy within 2 minutes of the show)

but a nice big staffed one?

If i am a hypocrite, you are stupid to say the least.
If you can't understand the difference, there's nothing i can do for a teenage fanatic.

Tarja's fans called her angel because of certain songs.
For example the Phantom of The Opera, that Tuomas said he dedicated to tarja,as his Angel of music.

Olzon thought HERSELF the tiara thing.

Want me to use smaller words?

Legeon wrote on 27.08.2009 at 14:43

Simply:religious fanatics used by illegal organisations for propaganda, driven by superficial but conviencing ideas of heaven.

So,you mean that Tarja or Marcelo hypnotize us with promises of heaven,so that we will destroy NW?
    LOL

    btw,hypocrite and taliban aren't synonyms.
And can't someone be a "biased taliban",because talibans ARE biased.

  130. "to chose the nickname "angel" is a bit strange, but you chose "Legeon" and I am "mermaid" here. "

Mermaid, I can't believe you are reaching this level :)).
You are NOBODY , Tarja is Tarja Turunen on her official forum. She presented herself as Tarja Turunen, she's not hiding under her nickname. That's the difference.
For me she can call herself even Queen, whatever. It wouldn't change my opinion (a positive one) about her.
For you it's clearly different, since wearing a plastic tiara on stage is something to judge Anette for. You can't limit to judge her as singer of course :)) . It wouldn't be fun.

"To chose a nickname "angel" shows only that she is not so down-to-earth, modest, humble and shy as the rest of the band. "
Oh-oh you even do stupid irony. Then if you believe Tarja is a diva, Maestro had the right to write those things on the letter. :P

"So, now she (the bold ex-part of the band) has a nickname "angel"
and the humble, shy and down-to-earth part of band is wearing tiaras, boats with their nicknames in them and doing what Phantom so nicely called "visual effects"."
You still didn't manage to explain what's the difference between a plastic tiara in ONE song and calling herself "angel" :))

"If you can't understand the difference, there's nothing i can do for a teenage fanatic. "

should I show you my identity card to let you understand I'm 24 years old? I think the only one who proved to be fanatic here it's you. A Tarja fanatic of course. That's not hard to understand. You, Almagest, The Seer, I'm not sure about mermaid since she has always this "holier than thou" attitude but I suppose she is "in the closet" :D .
(As Warthchild is an Anette fanatic)

"Tarja's fans called her angel because of certain songs.
For example the Phantom of The Opera, that Tuomas said he dedicated to tarja,as his Angel of music. "
    Which song?
Wish I Had An Angel? It wasn't written for Tarja, and I believe Tarja knows that Tuomas lyrics are not all about her. Where did you get this info by the way? Did Tuomas tell you directly that Tarja is "his Angel of music" .
Tuomas didn't "dedicated" The Phantom Of The Opera to her and didn't call Tarja "his angel of music". He made an allusion that the song might, in a way, reflect the situation between them (it's still a speculation )
I don't think Tarja would have honoured him so much calling herself Angel(of music) lol . It's just a stupid nickname, just like "maestro", just like the tiara etc.

  134. "Some grammar wouldn't hurt.Or you haven't learned about hyperbole at school yet?"

Can you explain why exactly you associate "hyperbole" and grammar.
If you allude to "hypocrite" , it is written correctly

Phantom wrote on 27.08.2009 at 16:03

  135. Legeon was right when typed:

    "You are late Phantom.
We have already discussed Tuomas' Bono-Vile Valo hat. "

But as far as we are not desperate housewifes we never checked when was Maestro wearing which Tshirt, how many Tshirts he has, how often does he change them...

because as I said there are better looking men to put our eyes on.
(and even in these cases number of Tshirts is not necessarily the most important thing coming to mind)

Now, is not that interesting that Phantom DOES checks these things and keep them in mind?

For somebody who is NOT little fangirl, drooling over Maestro´s posters?

  136. @Phantom

God...You call us talibans when YOU do the same thing(even worse) with NW.

"Then if you believe Tarja is a diva, Maestro had the right to write those things on the letter. :P "

No he didn't.Even is she is,he had NO right to denigrate her like that.
Why then WE don't have the right to denigrate Princess here?Huh?

HE said that The Phantom Of the Opera relfects his musical relationship with Tarja.

"hould I show you my identity card to let you understand I'm 24 years old? "

No.it's easy to tell your age from your posts.Which means that either you lie about your age OR you haven't developed basic palaver skills that someone of your "age" should have.

"I think the only one who proved to be fanatic here it's you. A Tarja fanatic of course"

    Yes i am.Proud one too.I'm a proud Leven-holic too,does it matter?
At least i admit somethings, like the Angel thing which is strange indeed.
Olzon's fanatics can't even admit that she is a pop lover and metal hater.

Legeon wrote on 27.08.2009 at 16:07

  137. @Phantom

Oh,so you haven't learned about hyperbole yet.Ok then.

Hyperbole in grammar(mainly Syntax) is when you use a word to determine a noun or name that already has this property.

Like saying: "memories from the past"
Memories ARE from the past,so saying "from the past" is hyperbole.

    Clear now?

Legeon wrote on 27.08.2009 at 16:12

  138. Phantom,

you are still adressing me, but I typed only about half of things you are responding to.

I am not Legeon. Legeon is somebody else - young greek girl.

Try to calm down and concentrate - you are hardly understandable even if you are calmed down.

In your present shape I actually expect you to start howling...

I already tried to explain to you that neither me nor Legeon -
we are simply NOT OBSSESED with Maestro´s Tshirts, as you are

so I simply did not know. Sorry to fail yxou like this.

mermaid wrote on 27.08.2009 at 16:14

  140. Mermaid, I only checked the tshirt with Beast written on it, it happened to be on an official video broadcasted on tv and put in their official dvds.
I've also noticed the red Tuomas tshirt he wears very often. I happened to watch interviews, to browse some pics. Do you think this makes me a fanboy?
I mean why exactly you notice Anette tiara then, or how maestro looked like when he was younger, or the bono glasses. People who don't like Nightwish don't notice these things. :))
I noticed Marco pants though, he has always the same pair.
I even remember Tarja's dresses . So, do you think I'm a Tuomas, Tarja, Marco 's fanboy? :))
Ok I'll admit it, I'm a Tero fanboy. I always noticed that he liked to show his underwear for example. I came out of the closet I suppose.

So don't come up with these bullshits just because you are at loss of arguments :))

  142. "God...You call us talibans when YOU do the same thing(even worse) with NW. "

    Really?
Did I started to say "Nightwish rules! They are genius! Tuomas is a genius bla bla" . Didn't I say that I think DPP has just a couple of good songs? and that I absolutely dislike Anette Olzon vocals (even though I don't bitch about her all the time like you do)
I think you only see that way because I disagree with you on certain things.

"No he didn't.Even is she is,he had NO right to denigrate her like that.
Why then WE don't have the right to denigrate Princess here?Huh? "

Lol I know you would have falled in the trap. I don't think Tarja is a diva and I hate the way Tuomas wrote that stupid letter. You have the right to criticize whoever you want but not to "denigrate" somebody sorry. Especially in your fanatic position. Fine, you want to denigrate every bullshit NW come up with, take the consequences then :)) . I have the right to denigrate you since you keep on denigrate people. :))

"HE said that The Phantom Of the Opera relfects his musical relationship with Tarja."

He didn't say exactly like this. Since you are convinced of it why don't you find me the quote. It still doesn't expalin why Tarja would honour him so much (after the split) choosing that nickname :)

"Hyperbole in grammar(mainly Syntax) is when you use a word to determine a noun or name that already has this property. "

My bad , I didn't realize you were talking about the figure of speech (something different than grammar by the way) , I mistaken it with "hyperbola" which is something else.

Phantom wrote on 27.08.2009 at 16:28

  144. Phantom,

Ville Valo hat or Bono outfit kick you in the eye.

Tshirts, pants, shoes, socks, etc. do not.

As for Princess - tiara kicks your eye actually out of its place.

Her MMUUUMMUUU dress is something I will most probably remember till the end of my life.

I do not remember any other of her dresses/shoes/candle holders/cats/ etc.

I like to have a look on some good video with her hilarious dresses, though, because I like to have some fan.

But REMEMBER them? No. Not possesed enough.

That is why I knew that Marco has two sons, twinse, because it is writen in the book. he mentioned there that people believe that his two beards has something to do with it (it did not).

That is how I know how they looked like when young - there are photos of them all, in the woods and I remember thinking like: "OMG,OMG, she looks like quiet common girl (in book is writen that Tarja had a rural look of a Tyrolian waitress, I think) and then I was like. ok, this one looked quite good.

    Mystery solved.

Of course, this would make you look like too much like the "common fangirls" you dislike so much. You could say that I do it as well, so good point for you.
But, did I ever criticize you when you complained about how Nightwish sound? I don't think so, I agree with some of your arguments , especially about DPP.
If you notice, I even criticized Nightwish for firing Nightwish the way they did. Now don't you think a "fanboy" would stick to their truth? I don't, I think there are still a lot of fucked up things in the band. I think they won't last and most of their supposed "happiness" they show is fake.
I also think Tuomas fucked up part of his creativity keeping on doing this "soundtrack metal" thing. I hate the way the orchestra was used on DPP.

Mermaid, Tarja is not a diva :P

  166. Candid very down to earth interview. I felt for her in the first clip. She is very honest with her feelings on camera and you have to give her credit for that.
After this interview I wonder if maybe she is a bit too honest or open hearted for fame. (Not that that's a bad trait.)
It is very refreshing to hear an interview where someone famous is giving the interviewer REAL answers rather than canned speech of only what they want people to see them as.
I hope fame doesn't tear her open and use her up - she seems like a nice person.
She is not my most favorite singer in the world, but she still has talent in singing and seems like a thoughtful and kind person. I was surprised to hear her call Tarja "perfect". She's pretty much right. Anette had some pretty big shoes to fill after Tarja, and I think her humility is in the right place. Good Luck to her keeping strong and being true to herself.

Since it already started to happen, I do not have much expectations about her for the future. And I really had them, but she turned herself to a puffed up celebrity too fast.

Lesley wrote on 07.09.2009 at 12:38

  169. Phantom: Well huh, I know that quote, and it seems that Tarja used to accept Maestro's wisdom of what is "poppy" and what is "metal", or "art", or "tr00", or "progressive", but now she has apparently realised that her "poppy" vocals like on Once are not so cool, and reverted to a style that suits her more.

If you weren't as close-minded and prone to stereotype me, you wouldn't be surprised to learn that I like quite a lot of non-operatic singers, male and female, too, for example Anneke van Giersbergen. But I think Tarja's "poppy" vocals are not what compliments her best, they are quite average (which doesn't mean that I don't like them, sometimes). As for pop vocals (as opposed to metal vocals), I don't hate them (well, I can't stand the Britney Spears type of childish vocals), but they just don't fit metal, that's all. I've never said they always suck. After all, I've mentioned Madonna, Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Björk positively. :-p

(I suppose Mariah Carey has talent as well, but could profit from training.)

By the way, Tarja IS a diva. It's not her fault that Maestro turned that word into an insult for all his fangirls. I'm old enough to still remember it as a positive term.

Oh, and of course the idea that a sense of humour could be the reason why Tarja adopted the nickname "Angel" is totally absurd, because we all know she does not know what humour is, since she grew up in a boarding school for opera singers (in an enchanted Siberian fairy tale cartoon forest) where humour and rock music were strictly forbidden, and she was trained to be Princess and the Pea, quite unlike the Swedish Princess (not Victoria) XD

Which quote? That one about Once?
I'm sorry Almagest , I don't remember every bullshit I write here even after 15 days.

"If you weren't as close-minded and prone to stereotype me"
You sounded like a stereotyped dude, you generalize way too much. I'm glad you are not like that . The point was that I like Tarja's pop vocals, you are probably right that she sings less good using her pop vocals. But I still like them, I'm touchd by her interpretation on Century Child. Is that bad?
It doesn't mean that I prefer "commercial" vocals over classical vocals.

"Oh, and of course the idea that a sense of humour could be the reason why Tarja adopted the nickname "Angel"..."

Lol don't play games with me :P. You perfectly got what I meant with this whole nickname discussion. I couldn't care less if Tarja names herself "angel", "princess" or whatever as I don't care about a fake "oceansoul" boat on stage or a plastic tiara. These details don't change my opinions (positive or negative) about Tarja, Tuomas or Anette.

Phantom wrote on 08.09.2009 at 12:45

James: Yes, I know Emppu is underused and did some cool stuff on AFF and Oceanborn, as well as on Romanticide. But he has always preferred playing lighter, AOR type stuff to metal.

snowman: When you mentioned Marzi Nyman, I wondered for a moment why the name sounded so familiar, then - reading on - I understood I knew his name from his collaboration with Tarja. Haha.

His singing is atrocious, no doubt. But he had balls to go out there and perform BOTH Petrucci's and LaBrie's parts at the same time! Imagine if Petrucci were to sing that one while playing ... I don't think he'd do any better. Guitarists, better leave the singing to singers.

Now you've turned me on another Dream Theater song I'd love to hear with Tarja on vocals, no matter if Marzi Nyman, Kiko Loureiro or Petrucci himself were on guitar. SUR-ROUN-DED! SUR-ROUN-DED!
