TARJA TURUNEN: "It?s A Beautiful Thing That I Have Already Managed To Do Both Opera And Metal"

In an exclusive interview with ex-NIGHTWISH frontwoman, TARJA TURUNEN, Greek-based Rockpages Web Magazine talked with the Finnish singer about her solo career, Nightwish, opera and other interesting stuff. Here's an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr: The last time that we talked, you had said to me that you’d probably see yourself in 15 years singing Opera. Do you think that maybe this time approaches?

Tarja Turunen: "Well I hope so…you know…I hope that in the future my voice would be even stronger. We will see, for the time being I focus on my career as a solo artist and if the conditions are right in the future and if I am lucky then who knows? Maybe, I will do opera, too."

Rockpages.gr: Do you think that the opera audience will welcome a singer that made a name from the metal scene?

Tarja Turunen: "They have done it already! I have done opera in Finland and people were really positive - they didn’t pay attention to the fact that I am the singer of a metal band. After all, they don’t expect to hear metal songs in the opera, they wanna hear a good and powerful voice. Let me tell you something. The opera audience shares one thing in common with the metal audience: the love for music! As I say, I am not a fan of metal music, I am a fan of music simple as that! It’s a beautiful thing that I have already managed to do both opera and metal. I love them both, you know."

Rockpages.gr: I probably know the answer to that last question, but our readers want to hear it straight from you…the last Nightwish Tour got negative reviews from the worldwide music press. Maybe, there is something in the horizon?

Tarja Turunen: "Are there such rumors in Greece…(laughs)…me and Nightwish? Noooo…of course, not!"

Rockpages.gr: I was sure but I wanted to hear it straight from you…

Tarja Turunen: "No, there are just rumors. There is no truth in that."

  1. I'm sure tha she'll be singing opera in the future. Her voice is improving amazingly, and she is going better and better every second!!!
I'm so glad to read that she wont return to Fartwish... that band sucks... XD

OF CORSE NOT! I like her new answer. It's much more straightforward than that "it's hard for me to think about reuniting with NW now" she used to repeat last year. Who would like to return to the boat that is sinking. Ups, boat again, sorry Phantom. :-p

  4. To think that there was a time I was hoping for a reunion...my god.Now I'm very happy she won't return, since NW turned into a joke ( a very good one, though, that's for sure! XD). I really wouldn't know what to do if there was a reunion, as a Tarja fan and Nightwish hater :D

  6. I like that she says about future possibility in singing opera wisely, doesn't try to say that "oh yeah, sure, I'm a big opera singer, blah, blah". She just hopes she would manage to do some opera someday and that's nice.
And she already did opera in Finland, sang opera arias at festivals :)
And of course she won't return to NW :) After all she is too "divish" for humble and down-to-earth people in NW ;)

Smiley wrote on 27.09.2009 at 20:29

  7. Eh, well... More power to Tarja!
Of course she'll try and distance herself from (oh, I so love this) Fartwish now that it has turned into a debacle. Otherwise her former association with the band might backfire on her. She's better off without the sailor-boy with the white top hat anyway.

Is it the same band what keeps saying how great shows they are doing and how massive their touring is?...

So, if both things are true - then where was NW touring? On Mars, perhaps?

  11. Guys,Tarja gave an interview in a Greek web magazine called Rocking.gr.I will just post a very interesting part,it's in Greek but i'll try to translate it:

Rocking.gr: "I understand that you very excited with your solo career. But to you see yourself returning to Nightwish in some point?Or any other band?"
Tarja: "When it comes to nightwish,i don't think i'll ever go back,i see no chance of that happening.Right now i'm 100% focused on my solo career, but joining eventually a band,it's something i can't cut off...But this band being Nightwish, this is not gonna happen."

Legeon wrote on 29.09.2009 at 10:21

And what's with the "negative reviews form the worldwide press" ? Those greek dumbf***s have a wild imagination, eh...
and probably still got the bitter memory of Anette's statement that they suck....which is true btw :-P

Last Nightwish concert in Zagreb got negative reviews in the Croatian press. The one where Princess had the most descent dress ever, since she is in NW.

TheSeer wrote on 29.09.2009 at 15:42

  17. well, and we know that they receive negative reviews in Russia, too,

    because Aleksei told us.

Funny, how they pretend to be SO BIG and SO succesful,

whilst the only country where they still can maintain this image of them is Finland... :-P

and the only internet place where they still manage to keep it is a Princess forum..

  18. I love her so much! During the MWS tour I had the chance to see her live, and I can say it was an AMAZING concert! I'we seen both her and Nightwish during the last years, and in her place I surely wouldn't go back in the band. It's not worth it. She has an awesome career, and she's only at the beginning of it! This MWS tour has been a great one, both her, and we, the fans are happy and satisfied with it, and those were only the first steps! Imo it's a wonderful beginning. I believe she'll keep on climbing higher and higher with time! :) While Nightwish... well...

I read quite a lot negative reviews about Nightwish's shows. Of course not on their official board by the most active members from there. :P Many journalists had a bad opinion about them. (Just check some reviews from M'era Luna, Wacken, or Artmania) They are successful and popular, that's a fact, but this is not everything...

But I won't bash them... it's not worth it either. I better concentrate on things I like. :)

    So.. rock on Tarja!

    No.
Even in NW forum someone posted and translated a pretty bad critique...So,instead of following your princess tradition in insulting countries, learn your facts.

Anette and NW have the fans they deserve. That's all i've got to say.

Legeon wrote on 29.09.2009 at 17:43

  21. @DeadAndGone: I've also seen bad reviews coming from Russia, Brazil and MANY bad reviews coming from Romania. Actually I've never seen a good NW review coming from Romania. There was even an epic comment on Anette flat arse! haha
And in the same review the guy said that Tuomas and Marco didn't seem so happy towards her when she came around and said "Good mourning, guys!" HAHAHA

I think that Tuomas original plan that in these four years Tarja would fail as a solo artist and come back crying to his boat didn't work out, so now they have to stick to what they got. Poor NW

Well, maybe journalists from rock and metal magazines know some stuff better than common listeners and they have grounds to ask this very question... how knows....

As you can see guys,NW fans are more eager to believe that a whole country with all the organizers and journalists and interviewers suck, than to believe that their favorite band and their precious singer isn't so good after all,and that everyone except for NW fans can see they've taken the downhill.

  25. I've seen a few positive review of NW gigs, here and there on the internet. And just one negative, from a country I won't even bother commenting on. Probably there's more than one, that's for sure. But it's not on this "worldwide" scale, that this "greek rock magazine", is trying to make it look like. A bunch of bushman "rock magazines" and, an angry and bitter internet mob, consisting of under-aged trolls, much like you here amigos - is NOT what the term "worldwide" imply :-P
Also, Anette can say, whatever the hell she wants to, and I just happen to agree with her, on this particular statement.

Apropos, how are they not "as big and succesful" ? Is the DPP tour funded by charity...? I don't think so. Yet it's the most extensive tour, they've done so far. Contradiction much, eh....?

DeadAndGone wrote on 30.09.2009 at 00:04

  26. @DeadAndGone

"some" positive reviews don't erase the fact that there are MANY reviews from all over the world that aren't so positive, and one of them was even posted on their Forum, you can check it yourself.

Oh,and reviews from simple fans count too,and there are many that were disappointed.

I don't care what you think about Greece.I only know that Anette's fans are just as ignorant as she is.

Legeon wrote on 30.09.2009 at 00:19

  27. We're going off topic, but I like to bash Fartwish, so I'll add my opinion... XD
I've read reviews from Argentina, Spain and Mexico. They were all negative reviews about TuomAss little live show. All of those reviews stated that the band has lost their magic, and the granny looks totally out of place when she starts to "dance" (anyway, the "hep hep" takes the cake in that subject). So, as far as I can tell, I haven't read any PROFFESSIONAL positive review of a Fartwish concert... so yes, I think they're done... XD

I always have a hard time not going to bed to late since I always sit by the computer or watch some film etc...but I do need my sleep so now its time to crawl down and enjoy the cosy pillow;=)

Someone asked me in the comments section today if I miss touring and are bored? Actually I do miss singing and working. Not the flying etc, but the boys and being on stage;=) So I wrote to Tuomas today: write the songs fast, let the music flow! ;=)

So, I was on the town all afternoon and it was nice but a bit windy and cold even if the sun was shining.

Had some thai food at Big Buddha, tea at Waynes Coffee and walked around and had a nice relaxing day;=)

Tonight I have been watching Idols and now paid all those bills...necessary evil, right?;=)

Hope you all had a great day!

Didn't know that Britain is bushman land, for example :) But I think maybe DeadAndGone is from USA. Quite often people out there develop strange attitude that they are the main nation in the world so they know everything . Still there are also a lot of smart and humble fellows there who are not like that and that's good:). And yes, there are a lot of not so positive reviews about NW from different countries, both professional's and fans' reviews.

"Also, Anette can say, whatever the hell she wants to, and I just happen to agree with her, on this particular statement. "

Well, if she is not smart, not professional and really shallow-hearted, of course she can yap in public about whatever she wants, she would give just more proofs to that.lol

"Amor vincit omnia - Love conquers all. (Virgil) "

Did she think a lot before choosing such chessy pretentious remark (cheesy and pretentious in that context) to post ?

Yeah, Anette isn't smart, and she's shallow hearted. Obviously she's no match for the greek philosophers...and online critics. Especially those from "rock magazines"...those serious businessmans from the "worldwide press" ....... XD XD

You called those rock magazines with not positive reviews "bushman" magazines :). Poor Britain ,there was also not so positive review in British mags as well.

"Yeah, Anette isn't smart, and she's shallow hearted. Obviously she's no match for the greek philosophers...and online critics. Especially those from "rock magazines"...those serious businessmans from the "worldwide press" ....... XD XD"

Yes, it seems she is:) And she is obviously no match for greek philosophers or german philosophers and many prof. metal reviewers as well as for many metal female and rock singers like Floor or Anneke .

And frankly speaking I know a lot of latin proverbs ;)

Serafime wrote on 03.10.2009 at 20:03

  35. DeadAndGone:

"she's no match for the greek philosophers.."

Of course she isn't.You compare philosophers that spoke of politics and democracy, human existence, relationships and natural phenomena with a uneducated woman who said that she would liek to speak with the world leaders and tell them to stop all wars. She is THAT educated and informed.

It seems that Anette doesn't ignore her fans after all.We should not forget that she spoke about "narrow minded people",no doubt she was adressing to them.

If some people don't like her it's because they belong to a "stupid country" or that she has said something about them which makes them wannna revenge her.
There is NO possibility that she actually doesn't deserve to be praised.

Legeon wrote on 03.10.2009 at 23:41

  36. Oh, I realize very well, there's a lot of these reviews. It's due to the fact, that there's little morons, and shitty magazines all over the world. By repeating it, I simply tried to emphasize, on their INSIGNIFICANCE....got it now ? Basic stuff...irony...way to express certain things.
How much, how many. That's what you need to repeat, about 100 times, and learn to use them. Back to the chalkboard !

Now, the other troll. You'll find the answer,to your goofy remark about Britain, in the upper paragraphs.(or maybe not)
As far as the Floor and Anneke thing...they are no match, for each other as well, smarty ! :-P Voices, style, range, musical background. What exactly is the point, of throwing Anette into the equation? To tell me she's no opera singer, or her range is different to other singers. Very witty, you just discovered the hot water.

And frankly speaking, I think the only proverb you know is the one you find in Anette's post. XD XD

So all people and professional reviewers who do not drool over Olzon are shitty and morons and they are not significant? Lol. Well ,the same may apply more to those who drool over her, since they are just blind limited fanatics.

"As far as the Floor and Anneke thing...they are no match, for each other as well, smarty ! :-P Voices, style, range, musical background. What exactly is the point, of throwing Anette into the equation?"

They are match for each other in the way that they are both strong vocalists in their fields and made a big contribution through years of hard work into rock or metal stage. And Olzon neither is strong vocalist, nor she contributed a lot to metal or rock stage. I am talking about decent contibution, not her comedy contribution.:)

Sorry, only Olzon's fans take her blog as The Book where they can learn things about life and educate themselves. Educated people do not use her blog for it.:)
I hope you know this proverb "Res plus valent, quam verba". I do not think she knows that or for example knows who Cicero is, probably she thinks it to be another brand name for clothes, she likes to read price stickers more than books surely :). And I've see her "res" enough, funny though both her "res" and "verba" give herself away.

Let me guess:you speak only English.

  45. DeadAndGone: Classic move of puppet fans to ignore the facts - just call all the magazines that have negative reviews of NW "shitty" and "insignificant". That's the way to go! Never accept criticism!

Yes, the range of Anette is just not comparable to that of Floor (who has admitted to not even sing with a classical technique except the most recent AF album, and won't do that in her solo project, either) and Anneke (who sure as hell does not sing classical), nor is Tarja an opera singer, so why should you not compare them?

You know what - there are people here who have actually LEARNED Latin and could make up proverbs on the spot. For example, oculis clausis adversarii non fugiant - closing your eyes won't make your opponents disappear. :-p
