TARJA TURUNEN´s keyboardist featured on new THE ETERNAL album
28.10.2009
Australian atmospheric/gothic/doom metallers THE ETERNAL have issued the following update:
"Talented Finnish keyboard player Maria Ilmoniemi [pictured below with THE ETERNAL] who we met on our recent tour in the USA (she was in Tarja's [Turunen] band) is now at her studio in Helsinki, Finland, tracking keyboards for our new album.
"Maria has almost completed her masters degree in music and has an amazing range of digital and analogue keyboards, so we are very lucky to have her onboard.
"Due to distance, it's hard to make Maria a full-time member of THE ETERNAL, so she will be the invisible fourth member on this record and also the first female in what has very much been a boys club up until now.
"We are very excited to be working with her and we are sure the results will be fantastic."
THE ETERNAL will enter 301 Studios in Byron Bay, Australia on December 3 to begin recording the new album for an early 2010 release. More information will be made available soon.

WOW, Great news! Maria is really very talented person! I can't wait to hear it!

Maria!
x)
she's great and adorable... too bad she can't join this band more "permanently", although she must be longing for a long time break from touring after wrapping up the seemingly eternal Winter Storm tour.

Whoaa, great great news! it's so good she finally recieves the recognition she deserved :)

This is so great. My hope was that musicians that play with Tarja would get a pop off it, and here we are. I hope that more lesser-known musicians get a pop for their bands from playing w/ Tarja.

The last person who commented is called Maria...coincidence, or is that Miss Ilmoniemi herself ;) ps there is some great Metal coming from Australia these days. Virgin Black anyone?
Jon wrote on 29.10.2009 at 06:32
@ Jeremy , totally agree with you.Everyone who has played with Tarja is very talented. But for me Maria totally shined on the concert in Bulgaria last year. Too sad she didn't come again this time but Christian was great too :)
@Jon , just a coinsidence!:)))

Maria is a very talented keyboardist. I wish she would stick to this band, I think just performing live with a solo artist kinda takes some opportunities away. I for one wouldn't like to be overshadowed at such a scale, as for people to go "Maria who?" when they hear my name.
Someone wrote on 29.10.2009 at 14:12
Well, this has nothing to do with Maria or The Eternal, but it has to do with Tarja: Lady Turunen revealed another song title of her upcoming album "What Lies Beneath". The new song is "Naiad", and it will tell a story about the last nymph of lakes and rivers. The soprano said that her new song would sound "underwater"...
I'm thinking of something like "Lemuria" from Therion, with that kind of "oceanic" atmosphere... anyway, we'll have to wait to know how it's going to be like... XD
More news: Floor Jansen's new band has a name! "ReVamp" is the name of her new group, and she said that it's going to be "very heavy and very metal". On YouTube there's a video in which Tarja, Doro, Liv and Simone wish luck to After Forever's former singer.
Who? wrote on 29.10.2009 at 14:20
Good news for Maria! Hope she can be a more visible member from Eternal in the future. She really has talent!
@ Who?
Nice that Tarja revealed another song. Can't wait until her next album comes out!
And for the Miss biggest ego ever (Floor Jansen) news concerns: have you seen the list of thing you must be able to if you want to join miss ego's band? Really.. I know her in person, and her ego is like the mount everest.
For that, I would even hang out the flag if that Revamp thing turns out to be the biggest FAIL in history. Although I don;t hope that ofcourse for the other people involved..
And please, keep MFF miss ego free would you? She's not from Finland and doesn;t has anything to do with Finland. May it only be for my sake (A)

Sonny:
HAHAHAHA!! well, I don't know why you dislike Floor so much, but if I had her voice, I would probably have a big ego too... XD
Anyway, my comment about her new band wasn't out of place at all, because there's a video in YouTube about Jansen's new band in which Tarja (a Finnish singer... XD) wishes good luck for her, so this was the right place to post it... XP
And I don't really care if Floor has a big ego, as long as she still talented as a singer. Anyways I would like to know which ones were those things you have to be able to do, if you want to join her... hehe, sorry, but I don't know, and I'm curious, I can't help it... XD
Who? wrote on 29.10.2009 at 18:11
Sonny:
I've searched for the info about the things she wants in a member of her band (I told you I was curious), and they're normal things. The only point that sounded dumb to me was the "being a male" one (why a girl can't play in her band if she has the talent?).
Maybe you dislike her because you had a personal problem with her or something, but the things she's asking for a band member are totally understandable.
Who? wrote on 29.10.2009 at 18:32
Great news for Maria, I'm very glad for her. She is doing several projects now as far as I know, that's great that she is getting more famous. Well, thanks to her talent and working with Tarja :)
Sonny
WTF, why do you speak in such way about Floor? She doesn't have any ego, she is quite nice, not to mention she is one of the best female metal singers, and she is respected a lot by such metal ladies like Simone, Liv, Doro and Tarja as you can see from their congratulations :)
Wilska wrote on 29.10.2009 at 19:42
I've lived in the same town as her for quite some years. I've also went to the same school and too bad, I do see her quite often. So I do know what I am talking about. since you only see her every know and then and then off course she acts like a nice person. Since you know, if you'd stop worshiping her and buying her things, then she must find other work ;).
And I really hope for you as a fan that you aren't a bit different then the average fan. 'Cause if you are, I wouldn't be so sure about it if she likes you as a fan of hers. You wouldn't be the first one of who she made completely ridiculous ;)
And about the "how do you have to guts to speak about her in such a way" thing, I know that some of you are saying a lot of bad things about, for example and to stay a little bit with the Tarja news, Tarja's follower up with Nightwish. And if I'm not ok to say things about Floor, although I base them on my own experiences and you only on things being spread by the media, then why is it ok for you to say that kind of things about Anette? She's respected too by a lot of musicians. (Too avoid an other attack, I'm really not a Fanette.)
And I didn't apply for any of the jobs nor I am willing to do. Playing in the same band as Jansen would be an "over my dead body".
And when you said that it was ontopic since Tarja gave her her congrats, you're wrong. Since this is going about Maria and not about Tarja. Or you can also say that it's about Maria and Tarja, but then still it doesn't goes about that video of yours.
But since I already found out some time ago that opinions, other than the ones that tempt to be mainstream here,
aren't appreciated by a lot of the people, I will just rest my case. I already have given her to much of my time.
I hope for all of you who like her, are buying it. Please do so. She also have to pay tax here in the Netherlands over her income..
And please, just go back to the Maria and Tarja news. Since this is kinda off-topic. This is Maria's article. Let's not ruin it by talking about other, less interesting people.
Sonny wrote on 29.10.2009 at 20:17
Sonny,
Ok you don't like Floor cause she hurt you or something in real life and you met her, but she is still a top female metal singer, she was years on metal stage and one of the best there, no matter if you don't like her as a person.
And since this is topic about Maria and Tarja to mention that video was totally ok, cause it is related to the topic, but as you don't like Floor you don't like that video congratulations to her, that's all.
That video congratulation is awesome - all those great metal ladies congratulate another great metal lady.
Wilska wrote on 29.10.2009 at 22:33
Sonny:
You're assuming a lot of things that have never been said.
I don't think that you're out of place by critizicing Floor. I do critizice a lot a people trhough the internet, so I don't have any problems with you experssing yourself. No one here is worshiping the dutch singer.
I'm NOT a Floor fan, I just like her voice and I bought two After Forever's albums, that's all. You may like her or not as a person, but she's amazing as a singer, and that's the only thing that matters to me.
Anyway, this still being a subjetive thing. You know her personally, so what? I'm sure that many other people know her personally and they think she's nice. You're not telling us "the truth" about Floor. You're just expressing your personal thoughts about her, that's all.
Who? wrote on 29.10.2009 at 23:27
Sonny:
My comment about Floor is totally related to this post.
It's not even hard to realize that, just read the title: "TARJA TURUNEN keyboardist..."
Maria's name is not in the headline of this article, this is a Tarja Turunen related info.
If Tarja wishes good luck to Floor through YouTube, the info has a lot to do with this website and with this post.
Anyway, I couldn't care less if you think that I was right or wrong about commenting on Jansen's new band. Ii´ll write whatever I want, wherever I want... XD
And if I was off topic writing about ReVamp, you weren't exactly "on topic" writing that Floor has a big ego and stuff like that...
Who? wrote on 29.10.2009 at 23:42
*Sigh*
Since I don't want to continu this argue.. I just say it this way:
You're right that my answer was just as of topic as was you're Revamp thing. Since you talked more about Revamp than about Tarja's keyboardist Maria in that post ;) And I apologize for that.
Maybe I'm assuming a lot of things, but that's the way they came over to me. And as I said in my previous post, but just not with this mutch words: I DON'T CARE if you're going to listen to her, buy her cd's of whatever. That's your choice and if you like her, then listen to her. And you do seem really fanatic in defending her and you don't like it that I don't share your opinion. And in the way you are doing that (atleast 2 responses to my post, and I kinda sensed anger in it) I just thought that you must be an worshipping or a big fan, and I don't mean that in a bad way, but if I'm wrong, then I'm sorry for that as well.
I will be the last person who says that her voice sucks. But her personallity, also towards fans, ruined it. I'm not even going to explain that, since you probaply will blame it all on the persons I'm refering to and I think that that's sad.
Also I've never said that I was telling you the truth about her, or at least that wasn't my intention to do. I think your old enough to make your own thoughts about someone. Although I am doubting that if I look at the way you don't respect my opinion and if you do respect that, then why the hell are you attacking me on it like that?
And I'm just getting kinda sick of everybody saying that she's so awesome, and sweet and bla bla bla (You can fill in the bla bla's yourself with your own opinion) while she clearly has a real different kind of personality IN MY EYES AND EXPERIENCE. But talking about that was apperantly wrong. Since I'm not allowed to say anything bad about her according to the people who are reacting on my post.
And especially at Who?: You say that you couldn't care less. So then why are you reacting so fanatic? It really gives the idea that you actually do care..
And like you said: TARJA TURUNEN's KEYBOARDIST. So this is about TARJA TURUNEN's KEYBOARDIST. Not about Tarja of Revamp, but about Maria, also known as TARJA TURUNEN's KEYBOARDIST.
Sonny wrote on 30.10.2009 at 02:00
Sonny:
At this piont, is very obvious that we're never going to agree about this... XD
When did I "disrespected" your opinion? I just disagreed with some of your comments here, but that's not being disrespectful.
You're suggesting that I'm a fanatic... well, you should read your own posts here an you'll see that you look more fanatic than me:
*I simply commented about ReVamp (even without giving any kind of opinion about Floor as a person or as an artist) and then you:
Write a looong post about how big was Jansen's ego, and asked me to not mention her again in this website.
*Then I told you that I don't know if she was a good or a bad person, but I liked her voice, and the things that she expected in a band member of hers weren't so crazy. What did you write next? This:
You told me that I was attacking you, that I was worshipping Floor and that I was fanatical...
*Then I told you that I don't care if you like my posts or not. And you wrote that I was being disrespectful...
I'm not trying to attack you. I just want you to read your own posts, to see that you look way more angry and fanatical than me. No one here is attacking you. But I have to say that I feel disrespected, because you don't know anything about me, yet didn't have problems to say that I was: childish, disrespectful, fanatical and a worshipper...
And I'm not any of those things (well, maybe I worship Tarja a little bit... XD)
Who? wrote on 30.10.2009 at 15:18
@Sonny: Of course you have the right to say what you want, and I rather read personal experiences than media or fans rections, because many times, especially the fans's recations are biased. But it's sad to know that many artists make fun about their fans after they've turned their backs.
I also heard about Floor not being the sweetest person ever, and it wasn't only once. So I beleive you.
I never liked her music and I think she's an average good singer. I don't feel anything especial in her voice but at least she's good.
Mwaha wrote on 30.10.2009 at 15:52

Well, you started this long pointless discussion about Floor' s personality. In other words you just provoked all the thing. You are her anti-fan, good, so don't read posts here and don't reply to them since you see that most people here don't agree with you.
Clearly you are overreacting over her and these congratulations to her, and I don't think you are SUCH a fan of Maria Ilmoniemi to really bother, that this issue with congratulations was brought up here. Well, you can also go bash Simone, Liv, Doro and Tarja cause they congratulated Floor. Probably it makes them bad as well:)
Selena wrote on 30.10.2009 at 20:07

Floor - average? For your information she is better singer than Tarja:)
And by saying that you don't like "her music" you mean you never liked "After forever"-but AF wasn't only "her music" :)

Just check out Jansen's versions of "She Is My Sin" and "Phantom Of The Opera", and then go listen to Turunen's versions... Tarja owns Floor both times...
Anyway, I don't want to start a discussion about this, since they're both talented. Let's say that no one is better, they're just different (but we still know that Tarja is the best, of course... XD)
Who? wrote on 30.10.2009 at 23:25
@Osvald
That's MY opinion, first of all.
I think she's an average GOOD singer, she sounds like any other good singer other there. I don't see anything that special in her voice. She's better than Tarja... hm, based on what you say that? I think they are equally good. But if you mean she can sing classical and pop while Tarja don't. Then I disagree, because Tarja's pop voice is as good as Floor's classical voice(which imo, once again in MY opinion, sound really weird and not natural) imo. And if singing classical and pop is what makes one singer better than the other, Liv Kristine is the best female metal singer out there, because she can do both too and better than Floor imo.
Mwaha wrote on 30.10.2009 at 23:25
Mwaha:
First of all, you have the weirdest name ever... XD
And second of all: I agree with you about Liv being versatile. Is true: Leaves' Eyes singer is able to do both pop and dramatic classical vocals in a wonderful way.
Actually I think the best female singers are:
Tarja
Anneke
Liv
These three girls are the best ones: the most talented, the most beautiful and the most intelligent ones... HAHAHAHA!! well, I can't know if they're intelligent or not... but I feel they're smart women!! ... XD

People on the Internet have claimed that Tarja, Kiko Loureiro, Mike Terrana, Marcelo, Simone Simons, as well as Anette and Tuomas (and Marco, and Sami, etc.) are arrogant divas or assholes, while other People on the Internet have vehemently denied it, so why should I give a damn what People on the Internet, whether they claim to know Floor Jansen or not, tell me about her? In the end, it doesn't even matter, especially considering that you can NEVER be sure that a musician does NOT secretly despise his or her fans (which, depending on their behaviour, can be well-deserved anyway). If Floor successfully pretends to be nice in casual fan contact (online or offline) but deceives the public the same goes for any other of the listed artists.
Fact is that you can just never be sure what anyone, especially an artist, REALLY thinks about you (or anyone else, for that matter): they might just be nice because they think it's cleverer to pretend to like the person in question. People on the Internet spreading rumours are just that, and readers obviously have no more reason to believe Sonny's rumours than they have to believe mine, since obviously we might both simply jealous at the artists we are bashing.
Almagest wrote on 31.10.2009 at 20:07
Oh, and just to clarify, I'm NOT a fan of Floor Jansen, although I acknowledge that she is a very good and versatile singer (which is all that really counts to me), I own Invisible Circles and her voice has grown on me.
Back on topic, has anyone read this?
http://www.metalfromfinland.com/people/1475/Maria+Ilmoniemi
Obviously Maria's association with Australia is longer than that. Likewise, The Eternal's association with Finland has a longer history - just check http://www.the-eternal.com/band.html ...
I didn't know that Maria is completing her master's degree only now, after all, she's two years older than Tarja (although honestly, I'm not absolutely sure if Tarja has ever completed her degree herself; she has never confirmed it explicitly, everyone is simply assuming it).
I agree that it is very nice that musicians co-operating with Tarja get more exposure thanks to that (although occasionally seeing Mike or Kiko recognised more as a member of Tarja's than their other bands is simply strange ...), though admittedly, The Eternal are a rather little known band. Tarja should really give her occasions to really show her skill off. In short: Piano and synth solos galore :-p
Almagest wrote on 31.10.2009 at 21:27
@Almagest
You have a point here,no one can really know about an artist's thoughts about his/her fans...Only from the ones that ignore their fans completely and not partially.Which means that no matter how much i despise Anette,i can't say that she constantly ignores her fans since there are people that say that she was a cutie to them.
Which may also mean that she was pretending. The same with Tarja.
But there are some artists that you can tell what they think, because of factors like:ages in this business,or according to their position at the moment.
For example:we all know that Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden in general, give much importance to their fans and try to sign and take as many photos as possible with them.BUT when someone tries to have an autograph of Bruce while he's flying the 757,he denies it.So normally, this person will go on the internet and say:"Bruce is a freakin diva".Without caring to think that,at the moment, the man was trying to fly a freaking plane AND communicate with the ground.Having a fiancee in all that,i know how difficult and tiring it is to fly a plane(that's why i admire Bruce so much for flying the 757 and doing shows in the same day...Especially those kick-ass shows...What did you say about leaving the stage because of "stress",miss Olzon?) and you have to be concentrated on that.
Legeon wrote on 31.10.2009 at 23:29
Yes, I heard both SIMS and POTO, Floor was birlliant. Besides Floor easily can sing both opera and pop music, while Tarja is better in opera, but not so in more pop songs.
Floor's voice is more powerful :)
Osvald wrote on 01.11.2009 at 16:19
OK, a stupid question: I remember commenting on a Tarja article on here, but it seems to have disappeared without a trace or explanation, including the comments that people wrote (i. e. their own intellectual property :-p). What's going on?
Almagest wrote on 01.11.2009 at 18:40
But not more beautiful. :-p Floor has herself admitted that Tarja is a better classical singer, at least indirectly, by stating in an interview on Sonic Cathedral that she never really sang with a classical technique on AF's albums, at least until the self-titled one. Tarja, on the other hand, never sings WITHOUT her classical technique, so even when she reduces her vibrato, she never really sings pop/rock style.
That said, you cannot even properly compare the power of Floor's voice with Tarja's unless you place them both in a room and let them sing WITHOUT amplification.
If anything, Floor is a more versatile singer, though that is also a result of Tarja limiting herself - she has stated she would often like to scream and such things, but she is afraid of hurting her voice, and she hates her "pop" voice (which we've never heard, so we can't tell how good it is). Versatility is an added bonus for a popular singer, but most classical singers aren't that versatile (in the sense that they master very different singing styles) and it doesn't detract from their quality. Tarja is versatile in the sense that she can intuitively adapt to the mood a song requires, and that is one of her biggest strengths.
Almagest wrote on 01.11.2009 at 19:43

deepsilent: Interesting, thanks. I have to admit I never really liked Plant ... his voice just grates on me somehow, I don't know. I prefer Deep Purple anyway. But since Tarja sounded so good on Child in Time, the idea of a rendition of Kashmir with her certainly sounds intriguing. :-)
It's also nice to see that Tarja is acknowledged well enough to be considered, even if the whole idea was not serious.
Almagest wrote on 01.11.2009 at 21:00

Floor's voice didn't sounded powerful at all while singing "She Is My Sin". Actually is notorious that she struggles too much to handle the song, and she's not able to perform it properly. She has probles with the high notes in the chorus too. On the other hand, Tarja (the metal goddess) performed the song with no problems at all, showing that she's the queen... XD
Anyway, as I told you before, I'm not going to start a discussion about this, because Jansen is talented and I respect her a lot... BUT... Tarja owns her any day of the week... XD

Hell yeah, for now I've seen the live footage for Witch-Hunt, sounds good! Pity it was just an orchestral version, hope it'll have some heavy guitars aswell! xD
Moonchild wrote on 02.11.2009 at 10:28

I don't think that Witch - Hunt will have guitars. I guess it will be just like the orchestral version that we've heard, and I like it that way... XD
Don't get me wrong, I would love some metal songs too, but Tarja's new ballads are something very interesting for me. She has improved as a songwriter, and the new melodies and lyrics are more dark, dramatic and mature than any other song from My Winter Storm. I think What Lies Beneath will contain: two mid-tempo (single like...), three heavy songs, Three ballads, and three experimental dark "soft" (aka: non metal) songs. That would be a good balance for me.
"Montañas De Silencio" is my favorite one from her new songs, and what I like about it, is that our favorite soprano is really focused on being a better artist instead of increasing the sellings. You can see that her new songs are more elegant than her previous ones, and she's not going on the Paramore side, if you know what I mean... HeHe... XD
Anyway, yeah, I hope some heavy guitars in the future too, but since Tarja said herself that her next work will be more metal, I think we just have to be patient, and the cool riffs will appear very soon.
