Ten Questions - Timo Tolkki

Timo Tolkki is a Finnish musician best known as the former guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer of the power metal band Stratovarius. After leaving Stratovarius in 2008 he has formed bands such as Revolution Renaissance, Symfonia and Timo Tolkki’s Avalon.

What made you want to become a musician?

It was my father basically. He played a lot of music at home. Different kind of music was playing at home all the time. I learned to listen to The Beatles, ABBA, Uriah Heep and a lot of Finnish Pop Music.

How would you describe your music?

It is very melodic and simple. Hard to cathegorize since my music has a lot of elements not only from Metal, but from Classical Music and also from Pop Music.

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?

I would change the fact that there seems to be a new generation that seems to believe they don’t have to pay for the music anymore.

Fine with me that in a long run that will result, and can already been seen, the declining of all intelligent and good music. Take reggeaton for example.

What is the saddest song you’ve ever heard?

It is a song called Honey. In Finnish “Katsohan on tuolla puu”.

What is your best music related memory?

I think it must be when I heard the master of the “Elements pt 1” album. That is still the best Stratovarius album for me.

What is the most useless talent you have?

Hahaha, too many to say!!!

What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?

Keep it simple!

Has there been one particular moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?

I think I can take anything we did with Stratovarius. I am so proud of us. I envy us 🙂

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

I would be dead with 100 % certainty.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

In Puuskarinne Jollas, Finland. I love that place and will live there aaagain.
