Niilo Sevänen is a musician from Joensuu, Finland. He is best known as the current lead vocalist/bassist for the melodic death metal band, Insomnium Here are TEN QUESTIONS to Niilo Sevänen!
What made you want to become a musician?
Tough question. I’ve always had the need to do things myself and create stuff. So when I got into heavy metal I wanted to play that myself. And soon I started composing my own stuff.
How would you describe your music?
Melancholic, dark, versatile, with a glimmer of hope.
If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?
Streaming service revenues are not fair towards the artist. But everybody knows that…
What is the saddest song you’ve ever heard?
Emilia Torrini: Gollum’s Song
What is your best music related memory?
One of the best memories is from yesterday: My son had composed a song and he wanted me to play it with him. He played guitar and I played the bass. The song has this 80’s post punk goth vibe.
What is the most useless talent you have?
Snoring louder than all.
What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
“You can make White Russians from oat milk too.”
Has there been one particular moment in your musical career that you’re most proud of?
Playing in Ilosaarirock with Joensuu Symphony Orchestra. We had about 40 musicians on festival stage.
What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Writing novels. Actually I am doing that right now anyway:)
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would like to live half of the year in Finland and the winter half somewhere else… warm…
